Newcastle 0 Watford 3 – Saturday 25 November 2017 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Jamie Smith:

“Christ, that was desperate.

“Marvin Zeegelaar’s total destruction of us from left back was reminiscent of Sessegnon doing a similar job v Fulham earlier in the year.

“The United player coming out of this the best was by far Lascelles.

“If his influence and organisation is the difference between the usually decent rearguard and this abject shambles today, then he is totally invaluable and can’t come back quick enough.

“Joselu was terrible again, far from being a Premier League striker, but to be fair they all had stinkers.

“Murphy at least had a go, some decent moments on one of his personal better showings so far.

“With an ominous fixture list ahead, we are bang in trouble and need taken over desperately before disaster strikes again.

“Oh, and let’s be fair here, Watford are a canny little team who took full advantage of our plight to blaze at us Keegan style.”

Toon Bano:

“Absolutely disgraceful. The fact we have lost the previous three games compounds this performance.

“Every single person associated with our football club should hang their heads in shame. And that includes our messiah manager.

“We have all been screaming for Mitro to play ahead of Joselu – but no. Once again we are subjected to his complete lack of threat of scoring a goal. Enough was enough weeks ago!!!

“West Brom now becomes huge.

“If we lose 5 in a row then a relegation battle will very much be on, given our fixtures through December and January.

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“We cannot let this disaster of a result undermine Rafa.

“I do hope he considers moving away from the 4-4-2 as we seem far too open.

“If we had drawn the Bournemouth and Watford games what would everyone’s feeling be?

“I would still be positive but this is a real gut puncher of a result.

“4 points from the next 2 please.”

Paul Lyon:

“Seemed to lack leaders on the pitch today.

“Our lack of quality going forward was punished and we looked likely to concede whenever they were on the attack.

“Thoroughly disappointing as before the match I felt we were in for a good game (as is often the case recently).”

Jamie Swan:

“I know everyone will be screaming that it’s a terrible result. It is man, it is I know.

“But Watford were THE perfect away team. Best I’ve seen this year or the last couple of years.

“We were bad and played into their hands.

“We miss Lascelles, Shelvey didn’t step up, Joselu gets worse and worse – but we are what we are.

“No lack of effort – but just well short of what’s required. Diame is THE worst player we have got and gets a game – WTF?

“The sooner we get this club sold and give Rafa a chance the better.

“Getting mortal to sort mesel out. Goodnight.”

David Punton:

“Can I be the first to officially declare that we’re in freefall?

“A very chastening day for all concerned with Newcastle Utd.

“A long battle lies ahead.”

Nat Seaton:

“I’ll be polite and simply say what a disappointing performance!!

“To lose 3-0 to Watford at home… can you believe it?

“They were fitter and faster,  they are not a top of the table team and yet they won with ease.

“Some regrouping to do before West Brom on Tuesday as by the end of the game I thought we looked like we’d given up.”

Paul Patterson:

“Absolute rubbish.

“Beyond a joke with Joselu now.

“Rafa isn’t immune from criticism and starting Joselu is now tantamount to chucking the game before we’ve even kicked off.

“As for the rest of the side.. Get the wages docked for that shambles.”

Joselu clearly has nudes of Benitez, holding him to ransom. Mitrovic looked more threatening in 21 minutes than Joselu has in 11 games, Mitrovic actually managed to get a shot away rather than falling over the ball (twice) like Joselu whose composure and finesse would have made Shola Ameobi blush.

    • 1957

I’d take Shola over Hoss any day. Our Spanish striker is a throwback to the days of Stephan Guivarch, George Reilly or Paul Dalglish…very little skill and little chance of a goal

    • mentalman

Theres a few in the team who must have something on rafa

  • TheFatController

The players weren’t brave today, excepting Murphy, who gave it everything in the first half to cause them problems. Can we say anyone else gave watford anything to worry about apart from in the last knocking where they were cruising …?

  • magpiefifer

Can’t see us not being in the bottom 3 come January – then what!?
Thanks for ruining my birthday today lads!!!!!!

  • Peaky Magpie

Who’s that coming over the hill is it a Pulis,is it a Pulis ???

    • 1957

Sadly by February under Mike we may need the services of a relegation saviour, Big Sham, Pulis…

      • Peaky Magpie

        You could well be right.

  • HarryHype59

The players should run out to the Tom Petty song “Free falling”.

  • Leazes Ender

Joselu should never wear a black and white shirt again.

    • 1957

And so say all of us…well almost all of us

    • Monkseaton Magpies

Agree and Rafa should not manage the club again with his team selection and not bringing on subs till well after three nil down it was like he wanted us to lose and threw the match very strange indeed.

    • Tino o

He’ll be in one Tuesday no doubt!

  • Paul Patterson

Pluck someone from the crowd and they’d have more impotus than Joselu.

  • Si

Can’t score and now struggling to defend. Recipe for disaster in this division just ask Boro.

    • Jezza

Four defeats on the trot, one proper goal in give games, seven conceded in our last two. If that’s not an all out crisis I don’t know what is.

  • love toon despite

Aren’t there people out there that say “In Rafa we trust”?…………..Joselu, discuss!

  • mentalman

We have serious problems on the right side of the team in particular yedlin has been very poor and on todays showing looks like he’s list his nerve

    • Big Al 1967

Yes Yedlin was awful today however he was offered zero help from Ritchie who at no stage tracked their wing back. Therefore that meant both Richarlson and Zeegelaar were free to run at him all day

      • mentalman

Your right ritchie didnt help but yedlin was out of position for all of their goals and on a numver of occasions lejune had to come and cover in rb and leave gaping holes in the middle.

We need full backs who will defend

  • Alreet

The only areas that concern me is rafa still starting joselu. Its like a sickness. He bought him therefore he has to play. Yet mitro is still hitting them in for serbia.

Diame is a different animal altogether but if you are willing to play 2 up the for the love of broon ale give alex a go with gayle or perez or even ritchie. We need another option and defenders are scared of alex.

  • nevfur

Shelvey and Diame both on each other’s shoulders far too deep beside the centre backs leaving nothing going forward in midfield. Manquillo working hard but not a left back ( that’s being kind). Yedlin swings from excellent to awful and back again in minutes but unfortunately we saw more of the awful today. Ritchie in a poor run. Watford fans bragging the obvious about their threat down their left but we failed to deal with it. Hate to see a witch hunt but sadly Joselu is awful. Mitro a loose cannon but more threatening in twenty minutes than Jos all season. Sadly we will now go back to one up front which still won’t be Mitro who will leave in January. Without Jos totally missing the ball when Murphy put it on a plate for him and Gayle getting the ball stuck under his feet we could have been two nil up and Ritchie had a good shot just wide but we collapsed after that. Jos missing another sitter just before finally getting hooked and it was lost by then.

  • Down Under Mag

A few of our top performers and key players are in a bit of a bad patch or injured. Stick Lascelles and Merino back in there along with getting Ritchie back in form and things have to get better. However for me a big issue is that we have gone to amore traditional 4-4-2 and we have totally lost shape at the back and dont look the same team defensively that we were early season. No threat going forward is inviting pressure also which isnt helping!

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Please bring back Pardew to spare me the pain of Rafa his team selections are the worst I have seen and will not bring on subs till we have no chance of winning hard to believe he wants us to win a game very strange.

  • fistsofsteel2

Is Rafa deliberately sabotaging our chances of winning with his team selections? Since Merino, Perez, and Lascelles have been out of the first team we’ve looked woeful.
Perez gets some stick on here, but his workrate, harrying of the midfield opposition, and application to his defensive duties are sorely missed. Bring him back.
If Merino hasn’t got 90mins in him, don’t use him as a sub…..start with him and sub him when he’s tired.
And the greatest mystery of the age – why, oh why, is Joselu a first team choice? Especially by a supposed ‘good’ football manager like Rafa. When Mitrovic came on he instantly provided more prescence and link up play – he done more in 20mins than Joselu has managed in three games.
    Rafa OUT.

    • Philippines

Should that not be “OOT”? My goodness, where did you larn yer Geordie?

  • HarryHype59

With hindsight is anyone actually surprised this team is in free fall? We had ten defeats in the Championship last season ! It was obvious a net spend of £50m was needed in the summer, to keep us out of the bottom six!

Fatty’s penny pinching and Rafa’s poor buys and team selection meant a relegation scrap was inevitable!

What ever happened to the Rafalution?

  • Saul Williams

This was the worst performance by a team in the premier league this season.whats happened to them?bloody joke, embarrassing, spineless, clueless, and any other word you can put in front of less.God I hate that man Ashley!GET OUT!!

  • 5floorshigh

Tuesday game… to start with Mitro, Perez, Merino and Mbemba……if Hoss starts then Rafa deserves the full voice of the Geordie wrath.
