Following the conclusion of the internationals, Manchester United have given an official update on the injury situation ahead of Newcastle United on Saturday.

When Jose Mourinho speaks at his pre-match press conference we should learn more – but there is good news for Newcastle in this update in the meantime.

The main news is that Man Utd have confirmed that Marcos Rojo, arguably their best defender, will definitely miss Saturday.

He travelled with the squad to Chelsea two weekends ago, even though not named in the 18 man matchday squad, suggesting he could be back for Newcastle. However, the official Manchester United update says that now they don’t expect to see him in the first team picture before December.

The fixtures may also play a big part in their thinking, as Manchester United face both Newcastle and Brighton (25 November), before then Watford away (28 Now), Arsenal away (2 December) and Man City at home (10 Dec).

Today’s update sees optimism for them that Phil Jones could recover from his injury when playing for England. If Jones missed out then it would be a bonus, as Manchester United have only conceded five goals in 11 PL games, the best in the top tier.

Shame to see that neither Matic or Valencia were involved in internationals, as they have been arguably their two best players this season. Matic in particular a puzzling decision for Chelsea to allow to go to a rival.

Other reports have claimed that there is very little chance of Ibrahimovic or Carrick being anywhere near a recall on Saturday, whilst various reports state that Paul Pogba will be given time to ensure he is ok for those more difficult matches on the horizon.

Newcastle may need every drop of help possible on Saturday so fingers crossed we might get a bit of good news on the injury front ourselves with it looking like Merino, Lascelles and Atsu may all miss out.

Manchester United official update:

“Phil Jones was forced to return to the club after going off injured during England’s 0-0 draw with Germany at Wembley. Gareth Southgate suggested it was a recurrence of the problem that prompted his withdrawal during United’s defeat at Huddersfield Town, but there is optimism that the centre-back could still be available.

“Fellow defender Marcos Rojo has revealed he is targeting a first-team return in December while we await updates on Michael Carrick, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba from the manager.

“All have been stepping up their comeback bids behind the scenes, while Marouane Fellaini came off the bench at Chelsea before sitting out Belgium’s international friendlies.

“Nemanja Matic also did not represent Serbia in their games in the Far East, while Antonio Valencia was also afforded some rest with Ecuador not in action.”
