Manchester United 4 Newcastle United 1 – Saturday 18 November 2017 5.30pm

Elliott 4 – Wouldn’t go as far as to say he was ‘to blame’ for the first two goals but he looked hesitant all afternoon. Failed to control his 6 yard box never mind the penalty area. Today showed me why Rafa was so desperate to bring in a GK in the summer.

Yedlin 5 – Continues to offer ‘something’ going forward but ultimately not enough and not good enough defensively. Ran ragged by Martial and wasn’t given good enough support by Ritchie. Caught on his heels too often at the back post.

Lejeune 6 – Had an ok game for me, I honestly don’t think the centre-halves did too bad. Could he have done better for the second goal?

Clark 6 – Not a good week for him on the back of a 5-1 defeat to Denmark. Didn’t do anything majorly wrong. Felt like both centre-halves were let down massively by their goalkeeper on the day. A few texts and comments from people saying we missed Lascelles today but I don’t think that was the case.

Manquillo  4 – Suspect defensively for me. No disrespect to Manquillo but the sooner Dummett is back in at left-back the better!

Shelvey 7 – Got on the ball well and did his best to create things. Would be quite happy with the three of Shelvey, Hayden and Merino in the middle of the park at the moment.

Hayden 7 – I actually thought the two centre midfielders did ok. The game wasn’t lost in the middle of the park. Although, he did miss an absolute sitter at the end of the first half, should have done better.

Murphy 5 – Looked like he had made a bright start to the game but didn’t get a look in to be honest. Just looks so nervous every time he gets on the ball. I’d even go as far as saying the club is too big for him at the moment, would benefit from going out on loan in January and playing more football. Must improve though.

Ritchie 6 – Not effective. Both defensively and going forward. Both wingers didn’t do enough to counter the threat from Man U’s flanks.

Gayle 7 – Looked as good and as fit as I have seen him in a while. Did well to link up play at times and took his goal well.

Joselu 5 – Looked dead on his feet after 60 minutes. Hold up play was ok at times but as per usual it’s just not enough. Rafa doesn’t have many other options, but if Mitrovic is on the books and fit to play, then he should be given the chance. Especially when we are in need of something different up top.

Aarons – N/A (Not enough to go on) Didn’t do anything when he came on but will probably jump above Murphy in the pecking order once he is back to full fitness.

Mitrovic – N/A (Not enough to go on) Deserves another chance because what we have at the moment simply isn’t working.

Diame – N/A (Not enough to go on)

Darlow back in goal for the next game.

Did you see Hoss nearly OG with a header

      • Rich Lawson

It was his most dangerous contribution to the match.

      • Leazes Ender

        Who’s ‘Hoss’?

      • Cuh

That would have been a classic. Quality own goal from an under-fire forward

Hopefully Hayden will learn that players like Pogba will start 15 yards behind you, sprint past you at 30 yards out to signal you might want to catch him, and then only saunter back so you can get a good view of pogba breaking his neck to tap in from 5 yards.

A specific incident and he played ok all game, but Rafa will be furious that we can’t be smart enough to track £100m box to box midfielders – anyone want to check back where pogba started as I only saw it in pub but I saw him sprinting well behind Hayden and then ahead of Hayden 5 yards out …

If we are to stay up, we need to learn from our mistakes and inexperience quickly

First half an hour we were very good. Nobody really expected us to win. Better teams than us will lose at Old Trafford. Don’t really want to signal anyone out but I really wasn’t sure if Joseleu was playing or not, and I just wish Elliott hadn’t

    • Leazes Ender

Yeah thats the reason teams get beat there….. they go expecting to get beat……. park a bus and pray for it to be over.

      • Steven05

I think what you are saying is it’s 11 v 11 and you should always go to win. And if you are, then I agree 100%. But they (Man Utd this time) do have a few better players than us. I do think the team we have do care and try, but that can only get you so far. We need someone to back Rafa with funds, simple as that

Some first choices aren’t good enough nevermind subs. Again how likes of Joselu and Diame get appearances while Mitrovic doesn’t is baffling.

    Takeover and investment required.

I knew who was writing this before I saw the “by line”.

Perez was a massive miss today. One of our best, hardest working players, on the bench against Man U – a strange decision.

  • Paul Patterson

As per usual with your match reports, goalkeeper to blame.

  • HarryHype59

I had to laugh at the suggestion that Murphy, who cost the same as Shelvey needs to go on loan to get more game time! A combination of underfunding and bad signings meant this team would inevitably struggle in the top flight!
