Manchester United 4 Newcastle United 1 – Instant United fan/writer reaction to Saturday defeat

Manchester United 4 Newcastle United 1 – Saturday 18 November 2017 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Jamie Smith:

“I detest losing to these, due to the carping of the inherently pathetic that attach themselves to Man Utd as an alternative to resolving the shortcomings of their own unfulfilled souls.

“Having said that, this type of defeat is not where seasons go awry, the previous pair of failures v Bournemouth and Burnley more likely contenders to be critical wounds in any end of season fatality.

“Defensively weak, perhaps an endorsement of our absent captain’s galvanising effect.

“Ultimately though, the lead and solid first half another reminder of how close we could come if subjected to a proper owner willing to strengthen the obvious shortcomings.”

Toon Bano:

“Always disappointing to collapse like that.

“We have an issue defending crosses at the moment.

“Yedlin (who was outstanding btw) gets isolated at the back post and has no chance against a tall forward.

Not gonna lose any sleep over this defeat but we need a win back on the board quick.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“That was really disappointing for me, soft goals conceded and you can’t miss the sort of golden chance we had right on half time and expect to come away with anything.

“At times we seemed to be very open which surprised me.

“The last two games are very unlike Rafa, we haven’t defended as well as we have the rest of the season.

“Also, Elliott is still not doing enough for me, he was shocking on the first and could have done more on the third.

“Not a huge Lascelles fan but this would have been the one game made for him, defending crosses into the box.

“It’s frustrating because this was not the Man United of old and we could have easily got something had we cut out the sloppy errors.

“Onto Watford next week. We really need a win now.”

Anthony Stafford:

“We take the lead then…caught in possession umpteen times…second the ball is lost it came at us at speed something we can’t do.

“Men against boys.

“Ashley’s reluctance to spend again rears its head, injuries again diminish a weak squad and against top teams, we are going to get banjoed.

“Pogba’s brilliant…fantastic and he was, but we let him, and he was 90 million pounds so he should be.

“The wheels are coming off…”

Jamie Swan:

“A vision of tight wad scrooge Mike Ashley’s reign of terror epitomised in this 90 minutes.

“Whilst he has sniffed bargain bins of Stoke reserves, Man Utd had a player in Pogba costing  £89m strutting like an atomic peacock.

“Yep we played on the front foot and did well first 30 mins and Dwight scored the first away goal conceded at the Theatre of Screams, but it was party time after that for Man Utd – easy pickings.

“Must admit when I looked at the teamsheet it screamed a humping and that’s eventually what was dished.

“Can’t say Joselu has not been given a fair crack of the whip but he now needs to be benched.

“Dear Santa, please can NUFC have a new left back. Thanks from Jamie aged 38 and a half.”

David Punton:

“Someone at work suggested on Friday afternoon we might ship three at Old Trafford and I was in in agreement. In the end it’s ended up being four.

“Tonight we looked exactly what we are. An honest group of players, newly promoted, but lacking a bit of investment in a fair few areas.

“It was one of those games where apart from the goals we conceded we looked okay!

“Nobody expected to win here.

“Great to see the Man Utd fans with the Shearer ditty. That’s one from their greatest hits tape.”

Nat Seaton:

“Well I thought we would lose, I just didn’t want us to get trounced!

“Strange thing is though, I’m more hopeful about our Premier League survival/improvement after the way we played in the first half.

“3 defeats on the bounce, here’s hoping we pick up 3 points on Saturday – I’m more hopeful of doing this than I was before getting beat 4-1…”

Paul Patterson:

“A good effort from the lads initially.

“Sadly, quality came through.

“Man utd fans’ reaction to taking the lead is always shameful, as it is expected.

“Fair enough, we move on to the more important Watford.”
