Former transfer target felt scoreline flattered Watford at Newcastle

Watford star Will Hughes felt there was plenty room for improvement from the Hornets after hammering Newcastle United on Saturday.

Where exactly that leaves Newcastle is anybody’s guess after a three goal defeat which Alan Shearer quite rightly said could and should have been an even bigger defeat if the visitors had taken their chances.

Newcastle were linked with a move for Will Hughes in pretty much every transfer window, preferring instead to go for ‘bargains’ from abroad such as Siem de Jong and Henri Saivet.

Watford are reaping the benefits now, after taking a chance on the much talked about Championship star of recent years.

Will Hughes declaring after the final whistle that ‘The scoreline flattered us a bit considering we could do better in some areas’.

No doubt Rafa Benitez was also telling his players that they could do better in the odd area as well…

Will Hughes speaking to official Watford site:

“I thought in the end we deserved the three points.

“The scoreline flattered us a bit considering we could do better in some areas, myself included.

“Ultimately, the three points was the main thing and that is what we got.”

‘Two goals in two games, is that something you have been working on?’

“I have been for the last five years to be honest!

“I know I need to score more goals and create more chances.”

‘Back to back wins, so momentum starting to build again?’

“Hopefully, we knew as a group that the performances were there, we were losing games but playing well. We knew results would change eventually.

“We have got a great squad of players.”

‘A long way for the fans to come?’

“Yes, a long way to come and they were up in the clouds but we heard them all game and we are thankful for their support.”
