Explanation behind Will Ferrell predicting Manchester United 0 Newcastle United 10

Will Ferrell is a major figure in TV and Film, making his name via the likes of Saturday Night Live, The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Starsky and Hutch, Elf, Zoolander, and Austin Powers.

He is also one of the growing number of Americans who love football and in January 2016, it was announced that Ferrell would become a part-owner of Los Angeles FC, a Major League Soccer team set to begin playing in 2018, one of several celebrity owners of the team alongside Mia Hamm and Magic Johnson.

This weekend Will Ferrell was the guest of BBC Sport and Mark Lawrenson, both of them making their predictions on all Premier League matches in the coming days.

Mark Lawrenson went for a very predictable 2-0 win for Manchester United over Newcastle but Ferrell has gone for a ‘slightly’ surprising scoreline…

His prediction? Manchester United 0 Newcastle United 10.

There is an explanation.

Rather than spotting some extra extraordinary talent in the Newcastle squad, or a love of Newcastle Brown Ale driving his decision, Will Ferrell is actually a Chelsea fan.

So a classic case of: The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

To be honest, I would settle for just the nine goals.

Will Ferrell pictured with one of his mates:

Mark Lawrenson taking to BBC Sport:

“Newcastle worked really hard when I watched them against Bournemouth and I liked the way manager Rafael Benitez had them playing, but it is obvious they are lacking a top-class centre-forward.

Dwight Gayle did well on the day but will he get them lots of goals in the Premier League? I wouldn’t think so, and I would say the same about Joselu.

“Again, Joselu actually played OK against the Cherries, but he did not really look like scoring.

“With both players, while you could not question their commitment at the top end of the pitch, you can clearly question their quality.

“I can see Benitez reverting to playing with one up front when he goes to Old Trafford, and again it is hard to see the Magpies scoring.

“At the other end, Newcastle will be well organised but it will just be a question of whether Manchester United can break them down.

“Benitez’s side will make it difficult for them but there is only one outcome.

“Prediction: Manchester United 2 Newcastle United 0.”
