Dwight Gayle speaks ahead of West Brom

Dwight Gayle doesn’t think this four match losing run started off with poor performances.

The Newcastle striker believing that the luck wasn’t with the team against Burnley and Bournemouth.

Gayle does though concede that the last two ‘have not been the best’, Newcastle conceding seven goals in total against Man Utd and Watford. To put that into perspective, Newcastle had only conceded eight goals in the previous 10 matches.

Dwight Gayle believes that the answer is simply to work harder and to show more commitment in both boxes, whether attacking or defending.

As for West Brom changing managers, he thinks it can have one of two effects, either prompting poor performances or inspiring them to fight for their careers as they appeared to do when drawing 1-1 at Wembley on Saturday.

Dwight Gayle talking to NUFC TV:

‘A tough few weeks?’

“The first couple of games of this bad run, performances weren’t bad, just unlucky to lose both of them (Burnley and Bournemouth).

“The last two (Man Utd and Watford) though have not been the best and obviously the boys are just eager to get out there.

“It’s good it (West Brom) has come around only a few days later – hopefully get back to winning ways.”

‘What is the key to turning things around?’

“We haven’t done the best in both boxes – attacking and defending. Conceding too many, not scoring enough, so we need to switch those around.

“We need to work harder as a team.

“Show a bit more commitment when we are getting up as a team and defending as a team we need to be a lot more tighter. More compact and not as open.

“We know that they (West Brom) have vast experience in the Premier League, so they are going to be aware and very tactical. Obviously a big side from set-pieces and good attackers as well.”

‘What affect can it have changing managers?’

“It can work both ways.

“One week you might not play too well and then the next they know they are playing for their career and they will turn up.

“Obviously it is not nice to be on the run of defeats we are on and even if we have to pick up a point away from home, we have to start again.”
