Alan Shearer responds to West Brom 2 Newcastle 2 – ‘Feared the worst’

Alan Shearer spoke for us all tonight.

Playing at the Hawthorns on a cold, wet, and rainy, Tuesday night in November was always going to be grim.

However, when poor defending helped contribute to a scoreline of West Brom 2 Newcastle 0 after 56 minutes, it put a whole new meaning to the word ‘grim’.

Alan Shearer commenting how he ‘feared the worst’ at that point.

It is bad enough going 4-1 down to Man Utd or 3-0 down to Watford, when you are playing teams with talented players and dangerous strikers up front.

However, West Brom had shown next to nothing until DeAndre Yedlin gifted them an opening goal on the stroke of half-time, a simple diagonal ball from Evan saw Yedlin totally lose it, the ball over his head and the home player took it in his stride before crossing for Robson-Kanu to score.

When more slack defending and Yedlin once again to blame led to a 2-0 deficit with 34 minutes to go, I bet not a single Newcastle fan believed we would get something.

However, a Ciaran Clark header and one-time Mackem Jonny Evans’ own goal gave Newcastle an invaluable point.

Much debate will follow as to whether Rafa got his team selection right and/or the subs as well.

Alan Shearer though declares ‘great character shown and a very good point in the end.’.

Just how valuable we may never know but certainly it was essential the four game losing run was brought to an end.

A massive boost for Newcastle but crushing for West Brom, whether or not Alan Pardew is named as the next manager…

Alan Shearer:

“Feared the worst after being 2-0 down.

“But great character shown and a very good point in the end.”
