Mikel Merino made all the headlines on Friday.

Both Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund confirming that the 21 year old was now a permanently contracted player, with a deal agreed up to summer 2022.

Dortmund stating that the midfielder had now reached the trigger point for the number of appearances needed to make the deal complete.

It hasn’t just been in England and Germany though, that this signing has made news.

Since joining Newcastle United this summer, Mikel Merino has also been outstanding for the Spanish Under 21 team, scoring and creating goals.

Many Spanish football fans are now predicting a very bright future for Rafa Benitez’ signing.

Spanish sports newspaper Marca ran a story on Friday about the Newcastle deal, these are some of the very interesting comments that fans have made on the back of that report:

‘To let this player leave, on the part of the best Spanish teams, is terrible.

At Osasuna (in 2015/16) was a real player, at only 19 years leading the whole team in the promotion to La Liga.

I said back then that if we waited two years, we would have made 20 million dollars.’

‘BVB have made a mistake selling, perfect to replace Sahin in future.’

‘This lad is going to be a great player! The future Busquets.’

‘Those who have seen it in OSASUNA, we know how good he is, you can not imagine it, he has everything.’

‘I read that the loan was for three million euros and now the option completes it with another seven million, is it really so? If so, he was given away, more so bearing in mind that English teams usually pay more than is due.

‘An error for Dormund and success for Newcastle, Merino is already.

Merino is already their best player, has just arrived and is already too big for Newcastle.’

To let this player escape from the best Spanish teams is a massive mistake.

I recently saw him compared to Xabi Alonso. Whoever sees a few games will see that he is a lot more like Busquets.’

‘Goodbye to your career. They will not let you out of there.’

‘Where is the Athletic (Bilbao ) of (President of the club) Urrutia?

We are going to let another player escape (Bilbao want only Basque players and Merino was born in the region).

This player, already could have been in Athletic.’

‘Merino is so good, so good, so good.’

‘Incredible that Athletic (Bilbao) have missed him..

Especially in today’s market.

Merino is already better player than Sahin.’

‘I thought that Dortmund only allowed a deal without option to purchase.

I see that it was not so and it hurts that (Athletic Bilbao President) Urrutia and company will not reach an agreement for such an interesting player.’

Looks like we played a blinder getting Merino signed. I assume Rafa identified him as a potential signing,he could be the best one we’ve made in years.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Keeps playing like he is & the likes of Real & Barca will be hunting him next year.
The major problem is the Fat One, if he had any ambition Rafa could build a top class team but that`s not going to happen so players like Merino won`t stay in the long term

    • TheTradge

Let’s just hope that he manages to find someone to whom he can sell the club, apparently there are four potential buyers interested at the moment.

    • Georgia Peter

      Porciestreet;
Lets just hope the fat gits in jail for tax evasion come Christmas so Rafa can get on and do his job.

  • Peter Stabler

The Spanish kid who writes that he is more like Busquets than Alonso is spot on.

    • gallowgate26

This kid will be better than Busquets. He is more forward thinking.

  • steve pearce

Good morning – did you enjoy your lie in?

Now all we need is for Rafa to play him in the number 10 position…

    • Clarko

Absolutley not, Merino is a defensive midfielder, to quote an article from this site earlier:

“EPL Index say that the Newcastle midfielder is averaging 3.35 successful tackles and 2.34 interceptions per 90 minutes” and ” nobody has won possession more times than Merino (35 times) in the midfield third”.

You do not take your best player and move him out of his best position.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

He plays 2nd striker for the Spanish U21`s

        • Clarko

No he doesn’t, he has played 10 times for the Spanish U21s, 6 appearances at DM, 3 appearances at CM and 1 appearance at CB. Uninformed moron.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

he himself said in an interview yesterday he played 2nd striker last week, you IDIOT

          • Clarko

Where’s the quote then? Quote him. Where is the interview?

He didn’t play as a 2nd striker, Spain U21s don’t play with a 2nd striker, they have played a 4-3-3 system in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship Qualification games, with Merino, Hernandez and Ceballos in the MIDFIELD. Moron.

          • Damon Horner

“I play almost as a second striker and have more freedom to run. It is easier to score when you are closer to the goal.

My job is to do good work in the midfield.”

Taken from the Chronicle (obviously, where else for MMM!). Sounds like a midfielder with more license to attack.

          • Clarko

“I play almost as a second striker” and “My job is to do good work in the midfield”.

So he doesn’t play as a second striker. Many thanks Damon.

“Absolutley not, Merino is a defensive midfielder, to quote an article from this site earlier:”

“I play almost as a second striker” and “My job is to do good work in the midfield”.

So not a defensive midfielder. Moron.

          • Clarko

Of the 76 games recored by transfermarkt, Merino has played 70 of those games at CM/DM, minutes wise he has spent 92.4% of his time at CM/DM.

“EPL Index say that the Newcastle midfielder is averaging 3.35 successful tackles and 2.34 interceptions per 90 minutes” and ” nobody has won possession more times than Merino (35 times) in the midfield third”

He plays as CM/DM for the Spanish U21s, he has appeared 10 times for the Spanish U21s, 6 appearances at DM, 3 appearances at CM and 1 appearance at CB

He is a defensive midfielder, fact.

The argument that you have stupidity entered in was in regard to Merino playing as a “2nd striker” for the international team, that never happened, it was then claimed by the same moron, that Merino stated that “he played 2nd striker last week”, again that never happened.

            #FlatEarther

          • paul mclaughlan

I’m just quoting what you wrote. Stay more consistent and stop being so disrespectful. Ar5ehole.

          • Clarko

“I’m just quoting what you wrote”, no you’re not, “So not a defensive midfielder. Moron” wasn’t a quote was it? It was a statement, made by you. An incredibly stupid and incorrect statement.

The following, “I play almost as a second striker” and “My job is to do good work in the midfield” are quotes made by Merino, not me, so the “Stay more consistent” line is also incredibly stupid and incorrect.

I think it’s safe to say that you’re incredibly stupid and incorrect.

            #FlatEarther

          • paul mclaughlan

The problem I have with people like you is you insult other people for having different opinions. Calling them morons whilst safely sitting behind your anonymity. Try having a grown up discussion without being rude. You might actually might stop hating yourself.

          • Clarko

I didn’t insult someone for having a different opinion, stating Merino plays as a “2nd striker” is not a matter of opinion, it is either right or it is wrong, there is no “discussion” to be had.

On the “rude” comment, I am not “rude”, I’m honest, if someone states that Merino plays as a “2nd striker” that person is stupid. Secondly, you (wrongly) called me a “Moron”, you’re hypocrite, you have no integrity, you are the moron.

            #FlatEarther

          • paul mclaughlan

If insulting you (after you throwing insults around) makes me a hypocrite. Then I’m a hypocrite.

          • Clarko

It has already been established that you’re a hypocrite and a moron, it doesn’t need any further confirmation.

Hey, do yourself a favour and check out the comments from the “Predicted Newcastle team v Liverpool on Sunday”, specifically from @MichaelMaximusMoose.

          • paul mclaughlan

Good grief. If I’d have seen that I’d have pulled him.

Lads lads lads man – we’ve just secured a very good promising young player and you argue amongst yourselves!! C’mon, be friends

          • Clarko

Yeah, lets just ignore lies, stupidity and misinformation because that would be the right thing to do.

          • paul mclaughlan

My you do have little, angry man syndrome.

          • Steven05

I decided to just ignore his bait, I can’t be bothered with the petty arguments on here. I miss The Mag as a printed magazine. Things were often bad but the articles and comments had to be thought about before sharing, and as a result it felt like up or down, we were Newcastle United.

          • paul mclaughlan

He’s a typical keyboard warrior mate. Any person who disagrees with him he starts being aggressive. In reality he still lives with mummy who still wipes his ar5e for him.

          • Clarko

What bait? You interfered with a discussion suggesting that I should ignore lies, misinformation, and stupidity in order to be “friends” with certified dunce, I sarcastically, but politely dismissed that idea, to which you ignored only to respond to the following,”My you do have little, angry man syndrome”, I see you didn’t ask that user to keep it friendly. That’s not very consistent is it? If you don’t want to be involved in “petty arguments”, then how about you refrain from involving yourself next time.

On a side note, I put plenty of “thought” into what I post, the same cannot be said for you.

          • Steven05

            Seriously – grow up

          • Clarko

            Great response, really insightful 👍🏾

Another side note, the following, “Seriously – grow up” coming from someone who replied to a comment that read “My you do have little, angry man syndrome”. Practice what you preach springs to mind.

  • TheTradge

I’m absolutely thrilled, the lad is pure class and is probably one of the best signings we’ve made in the past 10 years, the fact that we got him for an absolute steal makes it an even sweeter deal. Now we just need to sign another striker come January and we’ll be sitting pretty, we’re unlikely to be able to compete consistently relying on just Joselu and Gayle.

  • Rich Lawson

A real quality signing at last ! Hopefully he will want to stay with us for 1st team football for at least a couple of years in the prem’ to improve his already impressive game.

  • gallowgate26

Maybe just the break we needed. A player to build a PL team around. More chance that someone will offer £35m for him (Liverpool?) and Ashley will snap their hand off. It’s not even much money to clubs like them. Like the toon spending £10m. That’s the scary thing.

  • Damon Horner

Despite the haters inside and outside of the club it looks to be going in the right direction, decent transfer budget in the summer and a couple more astute Rafa signings who knows where we can be next year.

Genuinely love this kid, looks a real deal already.

    • Andy Mac

Haters of a man who refuses to put money into our club while his company benefits from owning us ? Yup that’s me !

      • Damon Horner

Once again… This is not a post about Ashley… Why does everybody think this club’s all about Mike Ashley!

        • Danimal

Well you did hint at the subject ever so slightly.

  • 1957

There is no doubt he is a quality player, he works hard, tracks back and wins the ball, isn’t afraid of the physical side of the game and can pass short and long. In some ways he reminds me of Robert Lee after Keegan moved him to a central midfield role.

He’s a player to build your team around

  • Whickhamrobbie

another cabaye perhaps ,looks good so far but as ever can we hold on to him long term

  • Georgia Peter

    Porciestreet;
Listen to me bud…..NO player is too big for Newcastle United ..Get it…!

  • Andy Mac

Pretty sure the lad can still play for Spain even if he is in a norhern outpost of Europe ?

  • Stephen Paylor

Confirms to me that raga budget is for available revenue as it comes in which is why he was short in the summer. This deal was structured as a permanent deal really but allowing time to have more money available. Expect diame to,be moved on in winter and a top number 10 signed. Maybe another rafa hidden gem like merino
