Picking his Premier League team of the week, Jamie Redknapp has picked out one Newcastle star from Saturday’s win over Palace.
Choosing a Newcastle defender after another clean sheet, most people would probably assume it is Jamaal Lascelles.
However, nice to see Jamie Redknapp picking out Florian Lejeune for his contribution.
The Frenchman put in another cool display as a key part in Saturday’s win and clean sheet, following on from a similar display against Southampton that was only marred by his rush of blood to the head for the penalty.
Having impressed even in the opening half hour against Tottenham before injury, Newcastle fans are liking what they see with big centre-half.
An embarrassment of riches for Rafa Benitez when it comes to the middle of the defence, as Ciaran Clark now finds himself on the bench, with Chancel Mbemba not even making the matchday squad in recent weeks.
He maybe hasn’t got quite the scope of Mikel Merino in terms of what he could achieve in years to come, but just like the young Spaniard, Florian Lejeune has probably gone a little under the radar so far in his early matches.
Redknapp’s nomination suggests that this is now changing and certainly Rafa Benitez will be pleased with the contribution of all his defenders, the competition for places helping to produce a goals against record of only eight in nine matches, with only the top three clubs in the Premier League beating that so far.
