This is the predicted Newcastle team v Southampton for Sunday’s match.
Last weekend Rafa Benitez made two changes to his team for the game against Liverpool.
He brought Manquillo in for Chancel Mbemba and Jonjo Shelvey was given a chance to see if a partnership with Mikel Merino could be productive.
Talking ahead of tomorrow’s game, Rafa Benitez gave an update on the injury situation.
The United boss confirmed that despite staying at home in the international fortnight, both Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie would be available for Southampton.
Likewise, Jonjo Shelvey will be fit to play despite his broken finger, though Rafa warned he won’t be taking any throw-ins.
The only ones definitely missing Sunday will be Massadio Haidara and Paul Dummett, the long-term injured.
Rafa indicated everybody else would be able to play, with only ‘small problems’ for a few players.
Chancel Mbemba was left out of the squad altogether for that Liverpool match so presumably it was a knock rather than tactical, as surely he would have been on the bench in that event. Having played for DR Congo last week, I think he will come back in for Manquillo.
The rest of the back five is surely set to stay the same, whilst Merino and Shelvey worked pretty well against Liverpool and will hopefully get a chance to show more going forward against the Saints.
Despite not convincing many fans, Ayoze Perez appears set to continue in the number 10 role. Diame is no alternative and Rafa has shown no inclination to mess with his usual formation to accommodate say Ritchie, Shelvey or Merino in that position.
Always a chance that Dwight Gayle can get his chance at any time but Joselu’s fortunate goal against Liverpool should ensure he stays in the team, doing an ok job otherwise.
The one surprise I think could be Jacob Murphy getting just his second Premier League start, having played at Swansea.
Atsu has been having ongoing knee problems and had injections, so I have a feeling he may be starting from the bench this time, especially as he wasn’t great against Liverpool.
