Newcastle v Southampton player ratings by fans maybe not expected

The results of the Newcastle v Southampton player ratings by fans.

Always interested to see what supporters have collectively made of the latest performance, when using our interactive ratings system.

Each player marked out of 10 and the averages below, the top three and bottom two players are in line with what I thought, but maybe not the general level of marks handed down by Newcastle fans.

Jonjo Shelvey was easily man of the match and he top scored with 7.5.

Close behind were the only other two Newcastle players to get 7.0 or better, fellow midfielders Matt Ritchie (7.2) and Isaac Hayden (7.0).

I think the bottom line is, that if the game had ended in a 2-1 win rather than a 2-2 draw, that trio and probably the rest of the side, would have had around a full mark higher from supporters.

However, no shock to see the bottom two in the ratings.

Hardly touching the ball we had Joselu (5.1), then despite having little to do, Rob Elliot (5.3) allowed the weak shot to elude him on the first goal, plus almost gifted another one when flapping poorly at a cross.

The fourth highest mark was Jamaal Lascelles (6.7),, a very decent display by the captain but maybe the defence being punished a little but as a collective unit, after leaking two poor goals.

Speaking of which, Lejeune (6.1) spoilt a very good first full 90 minutes for NUFC, when giving away a daft penalty, the fans punishing him accordingly.

Ayoze Perez (6.6) at least got noticed today unlike his usual anonymous displays. Did well to keep on going and score his goal at the second attempt but despite being involved more on Sunday, the Spaniard once again is far too easily knocked off the ball.

DeAndre Yedlin (6.4) was decent but lucky not to get a second yellow after a senseless yellow, whilst Manquillo (6.2) and Atsu (6.1) were steady on the left, though created little threat going forward.

Off the bench Mikel Merino (6.4) once again impressed, whilst Dwight Gayle (4.4) didn’t – the striker revealed later to have picked up yet another injury.

Below are the ratings as voted by Newcastle fans up to 11am on Monday morning:
