Each player marked out of 10 and the averages below.
Two players share star rating, with Jamaal Lascelles and match winner Mikel Merino each earning 7.4 from supporters. The captain held things together at the back as NUFC struggled to get forward in any meaningful way, giving a platform to substitute Merino to add a little quality/composure as well as winning the game.
The next two highest marks were also for defenders: Florian Lejeune (7.0) working well alongside Lascelles, whilst DeAndre Yedlin (6.9) provided a level of energy/urgency that many of his teammates were lacking.
After that it is a bit grim, with only four other starters exceeding 6.0 from the supporters.
Rob Elliot (6.5) put in a steady display with little to do, whilst Jonjo Shelvey (6.4) played far too deep and had minimal influence until the later stages.
Manquillo (6.2) put in an ok shift at left-back, whilst in front of him Christian Atsu (6.1) looked early on as though he could be the answer on a dour afternoon but then faded.
Right at the bottom of the pile was Ayoze Perez (3.8) who had nothing to offer, followed next by Joselu (4.4), the striker once again struggling to be a force in the match.
Isaac Hayden (5.4) was first to be subbed and another who wasn’t at the races.
Maybe a game to hang on to the old saying of the sign of a good team is when they win even if they don’t play well…(and can bring Merino off the bench!)
