Newcastle 1 Liverpool 1 – Sunday 1 October 2017

Elliott 8 – Made several key saves and was beaten by a great strike. Much improved on his distribution today too. Looked like a proper PL goalkeeper.

Yedlin 9 – Was here there and everywhere. A goal saving intervention in the first half, he was solid defensively all day. Also provided that key attacking outlet out wide. Forming a solid partnership with Ritchie on the right hand side.

Clark 7 – Got away with one after a monumental slip up nearly cost us a goal in the second half. However, aside from that mistake it was a usual sold display from him.

Lascelles 9 – A colossal display at the back from the captain. Probably one of his best in an NUFC shirt with neither Sturridge or Firmino getting much joy up against him.

Manquillo  7 – Far from the load of rubbish that Sunderland fans claimed we had signed in the summer. A solid full-back and well worth the money so far.

Shelvey 7 – Did well to keep us ticking alongside Merino. Provided a wonderful assist for Joselu to score as well. Not as sharp as usual but having not featured for a few weeks it was a good display.

Merino 7 – Similar performance to Shelvey really and his first big test in the Premier League. Put himself about well and still looked calm when on the ball. A few mistakes but that’s to be expected. We could have the makings of a really good centre midfield pair.

Atsu 6 – Huffed and puffed but not a good day at the office. Struggled to get the better of a young Joe Gomez at right-back. Would maybe like to see Murphy be given a chance in the next game.

Ritchie 8 – Mr consistent and reliable in the Newcastle team. Works overtime down the right hand side and I can’t speak highly enough of him. May lack the final quality sometimes but he sure makes up for it.

Perez 4 And on the hand there is this guy who is absolutely useless. I’ve said this before but I just wish he would get up off his backside and play the game. Spends far too much time rolling around, waving his arms, complaining to the referee etc. I would let him off if he was good but he’s not. He’s rubbish.

Joselu 7 – Rating would have been lower if he didn’t score but he did and that’s all you can ask of him. Can’t fault his work ethic, and he seems to get around the pitch smoother and quicker than Mitrovic without stamping on anyone or picking up a ban while he is at, so well done to him!

Hayden 7 –  Helped to secure the point in the end but will be worried about the emergence of Shelvey and Merino as a pair.

Gayle N/A (Not on long enough)

Diame N/A (Not on long enough)

A brilliant game, a really good display and lots of positives!

Yedlin with his tenacity and pace had a huge impact – how many full backs do you see singled out on MOTD/Sky etc for not spotting danger? He spotted everything today. And dealt with it.

    • Wor Lass

He was MoM by a mile for me. Ritchie was excellent in his attitude and work-rate but I`m struggling to think of too many decent crosses he got in.

  • 1957

Yedlin was outstanding today but I thought Clark looked really out of sorts. Perez looked a boy among men most of his time on the pitch, but given SloMo would potentially be his replacement, he can hopefully improve

  • Paul Patterson

Elliot 8? Are you on drugs? His distribution was shocking..

  • Martin Rooney

Perez is useless? Hope you don’t live in a glass house. Check your work if it is to be published ‘and on the hand’ that means nothing, further for the match detail Newcastle were the home team. If you can’t give honest assessment, then you just shouldn’t give one at all.

We’re stuck with Perez as any potential replacement on our books is even worse.

  • Kev-82

What happened with Perez, he looked a quality player with bags of potential when he arrived, now he is stealing a living as a footballer. He’s actually getting worse by the game when you think he can’t possibly get any worse, yet he still gets picked.

You haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about. Perez is easily one of our top players. We wouldn’t be doing half as well without him……and Rafa knows it, which is why Perez is rightfully one of the first names on the team sheet.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

If Perez was useless Rafa would not pick him he worked his socks off and did link up play. To give him a four is a disgrace you are one of the boo boys you has to have a target, Please stay away from matches that’s if you go at all.

  • Wor Lass

Yedlin was MoM for me. I agree with Monkseaton Mag – a 4 for Perez is pathetic.

If a 5 is average then a 4 for Perez is generous.

      • Wor Lass

The average for JD-C`s scores is about 7.4. No way was Perez 31/2 points worse than the average player yesterday. He wasn`t good but he put a shift in and played his part in battling for that draw. Matt Ritchie was excellent and got MoM from Sky but tell me how many decent crosses he actually got into the box. Jonjo was good and got us our point but he was responsible for giving Coutinho the room to score their goal. My point about Perez is that, although he isn`t playing well and hasn`t fulfilled the promise he showed when he arrived, he runs himself ragged for the cause every game and deserves a bit of respect for that. Just because a player isn`t setting the world on fire it doesn`t mean he has to be ridiculed and slagged off to the heavens with silly scores. Perez has just taken over from the likes of Saylor, Gouffran and Willo. Some people on here just have to have a player to hate.

Disappointing result. Mitrovich up front and we would have took 3pts.
