Newcastle 1 Liverpool 1 – Sunday 1 October 2017

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Ben Cooper:

“I was delighted with that to be honest.

“I haven’t seen Liverpool play much under Klopp but before the game I was looking at their attacking players and thinking we were going to get battered.

“Maybe we would have if they had taken a couple of their chances, or if we hadn’t scored a lucky goal so soon after theirs, who knows.

“I wasn’t impressed by Liverpool though, there was a bit near the end where an advert ran around the pitch billboard which just said FLANNELS. That sums up a few of Liverpool’s players perfectly.

“Not NUFC though, just shows how much you can get out of a game by working hard and doing the simple things well.

“Rafa is creating a platform to build with better players, especially up front where again Perez and Joselu were average and today they were joined by Atsu, who never got in the game.

“Apart from a couple of Ciaran Clark moments that will get him a slot in Liverpool’s hapless defence if he’s not careful, I was totally satisfied that the players had given it their all and with this bunch of players that is all I ask.

“A great point.”

Jamie Smith:

“A decent result, Liverpool will point to dominance of possession and it felt backs to the walls at times, but they weren’t allowed the chances to find a winner.

“Yedlin the pick of a solid defensive display.

“A good few openings for United as well, the front two horribly off the pace, and Joselu extremely fortunate for the equaliser.

“We’ll take it though, hopefully give him a bit of confidence.

“A steady ninth place in the table feels like it may be realistic heading into another bloody international break.”

George Stainsby:

“Well, that’ll do, thanks.

“Pleased Joselu got a goal.

“Doesn’t matter if he knew relatively little about the contact- he was in the right place, applying pressure. He’s good at getting between centre halves.

“More, please.”

Jamie Swan:

“Not the greatest spectacle today, but a good point.

“Rafa decided early on that he’d take a draw and apart from a couple of spectacular self-induced gaffes and tons of  Liverpool possession, we never truly looked in any danger.

“Personally, I would have like to have seen us have more of a go 2nd half as Liverpool were average today.

“We do the dirty and donkey work great, it’s the sprinkle of star dust that we are missing.

“Safe hands this season and hopefully the rich bird with 28 billion will be power drinking with Ashley the neet and exchanging loot for the keys to the club.

“One can only hope.”

David Punton:

“We have a manager turning water into wine. that was a tactical master class today, with the players executing the game plan.

“It hands us our first draw of the season against a side assembled at a substantial cost with an array of attacking talent at their disposal.

“Joselu’s struggles in front of goal have been a big talking point of late but thankfully the Spanish forward has found the net today to rescue the point.

“Fitting tributes for Freddy Shepherd before kick off.”

Toon Bano:

“Take a draw all day long there.

“Clear gulf in class in the forward areas and if we had snatched a win near the end it would have been very fortunate.

“Speaking of fortunate, that was without doubt the only way Joselu could get on the scoresheet…Jesus Christ!!

“HTL.”

Kevin Christie:

“Tactical masterclass from Benítez.

“Well-drilled, organised and focused throughout – a great team performance.

“Ritchie was absolutely immense today. His work rate is just phenomenal.

“Yedlin and Merino stood out as well. Enormous credit to all involved.

“Pleased for Joselu, reminded me of the type of goal that Jon Dahl Tomasson or Andreas Andersson might have fluked for us back in the day!

“A great point that leaves us in a healthy position going into the international break.

“The question is: will a takeover be completed by the time we’re next in action…?!? ;-)”

Paul Patterson:

“Great point.

“However ,that was a disgraceful showing from the referee.

“That we can normally expect but I can’t condone that non-performance from Perez. Shameful!”

Paul Lyon:

“Exhausted just watching the lads, I feel like I’ve played in the game!

“Thoroughly deserved something from the game, if only for our endeavour and determination to see Rafa’s game plan through.

“Great result, wish we were playing again sooner but the lads have earned their rest.

“Atmosphere was excellent too, a real team effort on & off the pitch.”

Nat Seaton:

“A well deserved point.

“A committed and well organised team competing well against multi million pound players and making them look average…

“Hope going forward that we might just have the ability to stay up!”

30 more points from a possible 93 seems very likely going forward. It would be nice if we got over the hump in March or April and could breath a sigh of relief heading into next summer. HWTL.

  • Grahame Johnson

You might not hear it you may not see them but the gallowgate upper blocks sang all game, they have for our 4 games at home, the whole ground singing for the last 10 mins gave a proud mag goosebumps

  • GlasgowMag

why does perez get slated again i must of been watching a different game runs his heart out always looks for the ball even thought not playing in his natural position give the boy a break hes still young and learning his trade.

    • steve

      Because he was awful.

      • Toonrobbybobson

He runs his legs into the ground closing down from the front which sets the tone. I give credit to Rafas judgment way more than any of our fans… oh and the simple hes all we bl00dy have so support the lad until we have another better option. Key word being ‘supporters’. Lets face it we know jack all compared to Rafa who also trains them the whole week.

Before I get hammered im not a Perez fan but this team is about the sum of its parts not individuals and quite frankly im enjoying being proud to support a team like that. The miseries just need something to moan about.

    • Martin

I agree. As does Rafa. Who has won the Champions League and sees him every day in training.

    • Down Under Mag

Folks need a new target now that Shola has left and Dummet is injured…I get the feeling it’s a split vote right now between Perez, Joselu and Lascelles as to who gets undue criticism no matter what they do…

  • Leazes Ender

Wow….Well Sky managed to blank out the Banners and Flags….. did anyone manage the translation from Spanish….

….’despite the lies’… that’s this regimes lies! A message about Ashley for the world to see……

How did they sneak that into the ground…… well done Alex….. you’re banned now!

  • Jezza

Fantastic performance to grind out a result against a team with vastly superior levels of quality. A point gained against a top six team and comfortably top half of the table after seven games. Couldn’t ask for more at this stage. All praise imaginable to Rafa Benitez for the magnificent job he’s doing after such a disastrous transfer window. Just imagine where we could be now if Fatso had backed Rafa in the summer.

  • grumpyoldmag

Just shows what hard work organisation and spirit can achieve. Agree Yedlin was outstanding today but no mention of Lascelles? Why is it that folk don’t like him? He was awesome today especially with Clarke struggling against Salah.

  • Alreet

That was the best team performance ive seen in a long time. Everyone knew their roles i saw shelvey drop deep a few times linking with merino. Defence was top form.

We needed this against what could have been a rugby score it you let it.

Only the ref was appaling. A yellow for high studs and a scissor challenge. We were nearly taken out by the harsh challenges.

We stood up though and didnt let them boss us about.

Kèep it up lads and well done rafa.

    • Geordiegiants

Great effort by everyone, I thought Merino looked sloppy though, he looked a little bit tired to me. Let’s hope they can all keep it together until January and at least a striker can be bought.

      • Stephen Paylor

He tried to do everything too quickly and made rash mistakes. Still had some great moments though too

        • Geordiegiants

He certainly looks like he could be a really good player for us if he cuts out the mistakes. It will take a little time to settle, then he will be flying hopefully.

  • TwinFire

That was the best point at home earned in years! The tributes and flags before KO today made this club look immense and ready to take on the big boys. nudge nudge, wink wink investors…!
