Mikel Merino scores another cracking goal for Spain – Video

Mikel Merino has made a great start for Newcastle United and quickly became a fan favourite.

Arriving on loan from Borussia Dortmund with a contract clause that will trigger a permanent deal based on a certain number of appearances, supporters hope that the midfielder will quickly reach that trigger point.

Playing in all seven Premier League matches for Newcastle, starting six of them, Mikel Merino has really made the team tick.

With maybe the only thing missing so far, being goals, though he did come close in the opening stages at Brighton when the keeper did well to turn his long-range effort away from goal.

No such problems though for his country, scoring a superb goal last month for the Spanish Under 21s against Italy last month in a 3-0 win, as well as adding an assist for one of the other two goals.

Now tonight, Merino has starred in a 4-1 win for the Spanish Under 21s, opening the scoring in the 26th minute with another excellent finish (watch below).

A cut back from the left reaching the Newcastle midfielder inside the box, his right foot powerful strike unstoppable as it went into the top corner of the Slovakian net.

Whilst he only started two league matches for Borussia Dortmund last year, as a 19 year old Mikel Merino played a full season for Osasuna in 2015/16 in the Spanish second tier.

Starting 36 league matches that season, the midfielder scored a very decent seven goals for Osasuna.

A big plus if Merino can add a few goals for Newcastle this season – he looks well capable.
