Michael Owen gets in early with Southampton v Newcastle prediction

Michael Owen has given his verdict on the Southampton v Newcastle match.

The former NUFC striker getting in early, four days ahead of Sunday’s match.

Michael Owen admits his surprise, for two reasons, that the home side are odds on favourites for the game.

He predicted defeat for Newcastle in their last game but says the Magpies ‘looked well organised and disciplined when getting a point at home to Liverpool’.

In that game 10 days ago, Rafa’s players were up against a side full of attacking options, with the likes of STurridge Man, Coutinho and Salah, whilst Firmino and Oxlade-Chamberlain couldn’t even get in the starting eleven.

As Michael Owen points out, Southampton have very different worries to Liverpool, whilst the scousers can’t defend, the Saints can hardly buy a goal, especially at home.

Remarkably, Southampton have only scored in one of their last nine Premier League matches at home, going goal crazy and scoring three against a poor Hammers side, who then went on to ship three goals against Newcastle the following week, at the end of August.

In fact, if you add in the League Cup defeat to Wolves, it is nine of the last 10 home games where Southampton have failed to score.

No wonder their fans aren’t too impressed

The betting odds (see below) are a little strange when armed with this info on Southampton’s goalscoring problems, when you add in Rafa’s defensive discipline and the fact he will still be cautious, the price of 15/4 on a clean sheet for Newcastle looks ridiculously high. Let’s hope it proves so on the day.

Despite making a big reference to the goalscoring problems, Owen still goes for Southampton to score but the match to end in a 1-1 draw.

Michael Owen speaking to BetVictor:

“Southampton have failed to score in eight of their last nine PL games at St Mary’s.

“I am surprised they are such short-priced favourites against a Newcastle side who looked well organised and disciplined when getting a point at home to Liverpool last time.

“Correct score prediction: Southampton 1 – 1 Newcastle – 6/1.”
