Mauricio Pellegrino was happy with both his players and the fans and described Sunday’s match as ‘dramatic with a lot of chaotic moments’.

Newcastle scored and killed off the first half, then two goals in as many minutes set up an excellent second-half, with a draw possibly a fair result to some, though if anybody deserved to win it was Newcastle.

The Southampton manager’s final analysis being that he ‘knew it would be difficult but one point is a positive’.

It felt as though from a Newcastle fan’s perspective that it was a day when the team really showed they belonged in the top tier.

It was a shame that two poor pieces of defending denied Newcastle a win, on a day when they generally played really well at both ends of the pitch.

Mauricio Pellegrino:

“It was dramatic with a lot of chaotic moments.

“The most difficult moment for us was straight after we equalised, when we conceded the second goal.

“That was a pity because in that moment our mentality was right and we were on top of them.

“We cannot concede that type of goal, but our reaction was positive.

“In the last 20 minutes I felt we could win but we could also lose…it was too chaotic.

“In other games we have controlled the game and not scored. Today the team was too separate but with my responsibility.

“In the second half I told them to play more direct to create something close to the box. We did that but I think we had to be closer to them on the second ball.

“The positive thing was the character of the team and the fans pushing us.

“The reaction was good at the end, our best 20 minutes.

“In the Premier League, most of the teams have the quality to score and we can’t concede these sorts of goals.

“The fans were behind us, pushing our team, at the end we had our best moment. We never controlled the game totally.

“I knew it would be difficult but one point is a positive.”
