Leazes Flags explain their mission and how you can help

We asked the newly formed Leazes Flags to explain their plans and how you can help…

How long have we all waited for the time when we could treat match day like an event?

Over the past 12-15 months Gallowgate Flags have done an unparalleled job in doing just that.  Capturing that dormant passion we had all been bottling up, waiting for better times.  It has long been known the great atmosphere we were once famous for has diminished quite a bit over recent seasons and we all know various reasons for that, I’ll resist the urge to list them just now or I’ll never get back to my point!

Gallowgate Flags have blazed a trail and helped bring good feeling, goodwill and above all else, good atmosphere back to SJP.  This alongside the tireless efforts of fan group Wor Hyem and the momentum that is now building, the Gallowgate End looks and sounds amazing and long may that continue. We can all agree it is very inspiring.

For some time, many others and myself thought, ‘why don’t we have that in the Leazes End?’

With GF’s growth in popularity and the way it has expanded across the whole Gallowgate, it is a sight to behold and many, many mags want that display, that atmosphere, that noise in the Leazes End.  No one can deny how great that would look and sound, the feeling we’d all get from both ends of SJP rocking.

Leazes Flags has been set up for exactly that purpose and the response we have had in just our first week, has been nothing short of amazing.  There is a feel good factor at the moment, being a mag, and growing numbers of Newcastle fans want to play their part.

What we are trying to achieve is simple: big displays, loads of mags participating, lots of noise, and an even better atmosphere.  We have received positive support from all corners of the ground for what we are trying to do and that has been the best thing about it so far.

Not only do the mags in the Leazes End want this and want to get behind it, fans from other parts of the ground and those supporting from a distance in other parts of the world, also want to see it in the Leazes, as well as it being in the Gallowgate.  Utopia would be all four sides of SJP doing it, that would be perfect.

We have met with the club already, it was very positive and those talks continue.  We have also as expected, spoke at length with GF and were delighted that they were behind our plans and endorsed us from day one.  We have been inundated with offers to volunteer on match days and all manner of other ways people want to be involved.

Our funding page opened on Wednesday and already it stands at over £750, giving us an amazing and very humbling start to this project.  We cannot thank mags enough for donating their hard earned money to help us take this project forward, and we hope that continues, sounds corny but every penny counts.

This is by mags for mags and we all benefit from this in some way regardless of where we sit.  Every single penny that we raise goes on the displays, the same mantra that helped Gallowgate Flags become such a success.

We are a growing and developing group by the day and we welcome anyone who wants to be involved in this, they are more than welcome and can get in touch with us via Twitter or FaceBook.

One thing this week has proven, there is an overwhelming appetite for this to happen, an overwhelming appetite to make the Leazes End look and sound like it has in the past.  There are so many people want to help make this a reality and we hope that family widens and grows as much as possible, as we move forward.

We hope we continue to receive the same support and goodwill moving forward as we have had this week and look forward to bringing the displays to the Leazes End, along with more atmosphere, as soon as is possible.

The Leazes Flags message on their funding page:

‘We are aiming to create a positive atmosphere for both players and Mags alike in the Leazes Stand.

This is a new initiative set up to emulate the great work done by Gallowgate Flags but in the Leazes End. To hopefully make SJP the intimidating cauldron it once was.

All money raised is spent on Flags. For the mags by the mags! #leazesflags’
