Jamie Carragher is gutted after watching Newcastle 1 Liverpool 1

It was painful for Jamie Carragher on Sunday afternoon.

The Sky Sports pundit having to watch as his team came away from St James Park with only a point.

Jamie Carragher says he didn’t see Liverpool as title contenders when the season kicked off and certainly doesn’t believe it now. The scouser already trailing the top two by seven points after seven games.

Against Newcastle, Carragher thought Liverpool were in total control when going ahead through Coutinho after 29 minutes, only for Shelvey to unpick the visiting defence seven minutes later and Joselu apply the final touch.

Coutinho had tried to leave Anfield in the summer and as Jamie Carragher points out: ‘Where would Liverpool be without Phillippe Coutinho right now?’. He was by some distance Klopp’s most dangerous player and produced his goal from a nothing situation.

Jamie Carragher:

“Do I think Liverpool are a title challenger this season? Did I think that at the start of the season? Possibly not.

“I saw the two Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Spurs, possibly with the money that’s been spent or the players that have been brought in, I always thought Liverpool would be in a fight for the top four this season.

“Liverpool’s transfer window didn’t go well.

“You think of watching Liverpool in these first seven games, and it’s still early, but you take it back to Manchester United last season in terms of having a lot of games where they didn’t score and had lots of chances.

“At the end of the season they just went and bought Lukaku and it looks like that problem at the moment is fixed.

“I still look at Liverpool and think they didn’t fix the problems in the summer that needed fixing. That is the big problem.

“I just feel whenever I do a Liverpool game, I’m going to be saying the same thing.

“Klopp’s getting the same questions, I’m giving the same answers and I think it always goes back to what happened in the transfer window.”

“You do think, where would Liverpool be without Philippe Coutinho right now?

“His (Sturridge’s) chance, if that was Kane, or if that was Morata or it was Lukaku, that is a goal and Liverpool are coming away with a 2-1 win.”

“If Firmino is playing well, then Daniel Sturridge doesn’t start today…he hasn’t been a starter in 2 years under Klopp.

“It just sums Liverpool up defensively.

“They are in total control and then they concede yet again.

“How many times have we all got to say that?

“A lack of concentration has cost Liverpool yet again and whenever they concede chances they are always big chances.

“When you are defending you have to be really aggressive but when you are on the ball you have to be composed.

“Liverpool don’t switch quick enough between the two.”
