Former top referee Dermot Gallagher has given an interesting decision on the yellow, not red, card for Yohan Cabaye on Saturday.

Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each weekend of games, on behalf of Sky Sports.

In the Newcastle v Crystal Palace game, he has considered the Yohan Cabaye ‘tackle’ on DeAndre Yedlin.

The Palace midfielder only booked as he scythed down Yedlin, meaning still not a single opponent red carded in the Premier League against Newcastle since January 2014.

Already on a booking, DeAndre Yedlin flies into a challenge with Nathan Redmond but escapes a second yellow card.

Dermot Gallagher Verdict:

Yohan Cabaye lunges into the back of DeAndre Yedlin with a late, forceful challenge. After a lengthy stoppage, referee Stuart Atwell issues a yellow card despite initially appearing to reach for his red card.

Dermot Gallagher verdict: Incorrect call.

Dermot Gallagher says:

“My first reaction was that this warranted a red card.

“Ironically, I thought the referee’s reaction was the same, seeing as he’s run over so fast, put his hand to his top pocket and given the impression he’s going to brandish a red.

“However, after the tackle there was a long delay, and I wonder if the referee ran the incident through his mind, noted that Cabaye didn’t go whizzing through the air or go in two-footed so gave him the benefit of the doubt.

“My gut reaction was that it was a red card and Cabaye was very lucky to stay on the field.”

it was a red card ok as was Harry Kane`s

    • Peaky Magpie

Harry Kane could walk onto a pitch with a Kalashnikov, take out all the opposition and still just get a quiet talking to !!

      • Peter C

Some peope can get away with anything, and Kane is one of them, or maybe not, if he were wearing a Newcastle shirt. Surprised last week Yedlin only got a booking, the first bit of good fortune Newcastle have had for a while, regarding refereeing. They normally get the sh*tty end of the stick, as last season was a prime example.

    No sh*t Sherlock?

Ha ha you beat me to it. This idiot is getting paid by Sky for this horsesh*t?

The anti-Newcastle bias rears its ugly head again!

    • Steve McClaren

      Don’t call me ugly.

  • Alan Pardew

From the sideline it did look bad. He jumps two footed and we’ve been to all these meetings where that’s a red card.

    • Steve McClaren

I thought when your head brushed Meylers cheek it only warranted a warning.
The games gone mad, can’t touch anyone these days.
Cabaye just mistimed it, yellow in my book.

      • Alan Pardew

I tried to push him away with my head.

As that famous long suffering Blank n White– Marcel Marceau would say: ‘You’re a proper mime big clown’

A mime or mime artist (from Greek μῖμος, mimos, imitator, actor) is someone who uses mime as a theatrical medium or as a performance art, involving miming, or the acting out a story through body motions, without use of speech.

Seems many Premiership players are better than Marcel also.

          • Steve McClaren

You’re as easy to understand as me when I was at Twente.

  • dannymc21

It should have been a red card, but I’ve not absolutely no respect for these ex-referees.
They all dodged critical decisions and calling out active referees from a warm studio is quite pathetic.

Think there’s a copy/paste error in your article.

That was last weeks game against Southampton..
