Former top referee gives verdict on Yohan Cabaye dodging red card

Former top referee Dermot Gallagher has given an interesting decision on the yellow, not red, card for Yohan Cabaye on Saturday.

Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each weekend of games, on behalf of Sky Sports.

In the Newcastle v Crystal Palace game, he has considered the Yohan Cabaye ‘tackle’ on DeAndre Yedlin.

The Palace midfielder only booked as he scythed down Yedlin, meaning still not a single opponent red carded in the Premier League against Newcastle since January 2014.

INCIDENT:

Already on a booking, DeAndre Yedlin flies into a challenge with Nathan Redmond but escapes a second yellow card.

Dermot Gallagher Verdict:

Yohan Cabaye lunges into the back of DeAndre Yedlin with a late, forceful challenge. After a lengthy stoppage, referee Stuart Atwell issues a yellow card despite initially appearing to reach for his red card.

Dermot Gallagher verdict: Incorrect call.

Dermot Gallagher says:

“My first reaction was that this warranted a red card.

“Ironically, I thought the referee’s reaction was the same, seeing as he’s run over so fast, put his hand to his top pocket and given the impression he’s going to brandish a red.

“However, after the tackle there was a long delay, and I wonder if the referee ran the incident through his mind, noted that Cabaye didn’t go whizzing through the air or go in two-footed so gave him the benefit of the doubt.

“My gut reaction was that it was a red card and Cabaye was very lucky to stay on the field.”
