Former Newcastle star Steve Watson has landed his first management job.

Coming through the ranks at Newcastle and thriving under Kevin Keegan, Watson had an excellent Premier League career, also playing for Everton and Aston Villa.

Tuesday morning has seen The Mail report that the former NUFC defender and midfielder (and occasionally centre-forward…) has got the Gateshead manager’s job, with official confirmation set for later today.

Neil Aspin left Gateshead last week to join Port Vale, where he starred as a player.

Steve Watson has been part of the backroom staff at Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town and Macclesfield Town but this will be his first opportunity as a number one.

Gateshead lost at home to Bromley on Saturday and currently are 16th in the National League. this puts them 11 points behind leaders Macclesfield, Watson’s old club.

Watson’s first game in charge will be an away game, an FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie at Buxton on Saturday.

Good luck to the former Newcastle player in his first management job.

A number of other candidates had been linked with the Gateshead vacancy, including John Carver.
