Exclusive reveals Jonjo Shelvey injured breaking up fighting Newcastle teammates
An interesting week for Jonjo Shelvey.
After an enforced lay-off for a month on suspension and then left out of the starting eleven when he became available, Shelvey was eventually recalled on Sunday.
A very good performance and match saving pass to set up the equaliser, meant Newcastle and Jonjo Shelvey came away with a point against Liverpool.
An ‘exclusive’ though from The Sun on Thursday revealed that the midfielder had broken his finger in a ‘mishap’ during training on Wednesday. The good news though was that it is believed Shelvey will be able to wear light protection on the finger, so will be available for the away match at Southampton in eight days time.
However, this hasn’t been the end of the story…
Now, another ‘exclusive’ from The Sun (see below) has reported that the injury was actually picked up when Jonjo Shelvey was acting as a peacemaker after two teammates started fighting.
The report says that Jamaal Lascelles repeatedly called Mohamed Diame ‘lazy’, with the midfielder then responding, with it eventually ending up in the pair trading punches instead of insults.
Shelvey then went in to separate them and picked up his broken finger.
Jamaal Lascelles is club captain and signed a new six year contract only 48 hours after the incident and is very much man of the moment, one of seven nominations for Premier League player of the month for September and being talked of as an England possible.
Rafa hasn’t gave Diame a single Premier League start and only 47 minutes in five brief cameos from the bench, doing nothing to suggest he should start.
Not difficult to imagine where the support of most Newcastle fans will lie, whoever has thrown the first punch.
Interesting though to see whether the club will discipline either or both.
One thing for sure, if Shelvey had been the instigator of the fight then the media would have been absolutely loving it.
The ‘Exclusive in The Sun’:
‘Jonjo Shelvey fractured his hand trying to break up an amazing training-ground scrap at Newcastle.
The Toon midfielder jumped in when captain Jamaal Lascelles and Mo Diame traded punches at the club’s Darsley Park centre.
Shelvey, who has just returned from a ban after a red card against Tottenham on the opening weekend of the season, now has his left hand in a cast.
The midfielder became involved as Lascelles and Diame swapped insults before squaring up to each other during a fiery session.
Lascelles repeatedly called Diame “lazy” as the club attempted to keep players motivated during the two-week international window.
Diame, who retired from Senegal duty in March, responded with an insult and the pair then started thumping each other.
As Shelvey tried to break it up, he got caught in the flurry of punches and believes he fractured his left hand.’
