Danny Murphy pushes England claims of Newcastle star after Liverpool

After watching Newcastle play out a 1-1 draw with an expensively assembled Liverpool side, Danny Murphy declared ‘The whole Newcastle side was superb’.

The discipline, organisation, workrate and odd moments of quality, enough to see Newcastle take a point against the odds.

For all it was a real team effort, Danny Murphy was keen to concentrate on one player in particular.

Jonjo Shelvey made his first start since the opening day of the season and was excellent.

Murphy described Shelvey’s passing as ‘superb’ and ‘exquisite’, the midfielder producing a superb ball to create the equaliser.

However, he also praised the Newcastle player for his defensive discipline on Sunday, his ‘interceptions and screening’.

Combining those with his passing skills, the BBC pundit says ‘you are looking at somebody who probably has got a chance of making the England squad’.

The last appearance for his country was when he started in a 3-0 win in Lithuania two years ago, three months before joining Newcastle.

Murphy had a warning for Jonjo Shelvey though, saying that the midfielder has to keep up his defensive work, or else Rafa Benitez will have him straight out of the team.

Danny Murphy speaking on Match of The Day 2:

“Jonjo Shelvey was superb, played one in a four (midfield), in fact…the whole Newcastle side was superb – well organised.

“This was something that has been questioned, some say this was why he left Liverpool, not taking his defensive duties seriously enough.

“With Rafa Benitez you have to, otherwise you won’t play.

“He is a superb passer of the ball, great technically, sees the pictures. Some of his passing today was exquisite.

“You need somebody in the middle of the pitch who can open up teams.

“If Shelvey adds interceptions and screening to his other skills, all of a sudden you are looking at somebody who probably has got a chance of making the England squad.

“Not too many players in the Premier League who can play those type of passes.

“You have got to have something about you to play in the middle of pitch at Newcastle and dictate play.

“The fans will forgive him the odd misdemeanour because of the quality he gives you.”
