The Newcastle team v Burnley has just been confirmed.

Only the one change as Mohamed Diame comes in, with Isaac Hayden dropping to the bench.

So presumably Diame will play alongside Shelvey in the middle of the pitch.

The club have revealed that Mikel Merino is missing from the squad due to having a back injury assessed.

Henri Saivet makes the bench but still no place for Mitrovic in the squad.

This is who Rafa Benitez starts with:

Elliot, Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Manquillo, Ritchie, Diame, Shelvey, Atsu, Perez, Joselu

and the Subs:

Darlow, Gamez, Clark, Hayden, Saivet, Murphy, Gayle

  • Steve Smith

Merino being sold already after the Sky puff piece no doubt!

    • Damon Horner

Obviously more likely than Merino picking up an injury.

  • steve

What the hell must Mitrovic be doing in training to deserve this.

  • sid

That should keep MMM happy, slo-mo and joselu starting

  • Kev-82

I’m guessing Merino injured but why the hell would you have Diane in ahead of Hayden?

  • Mrkgw

We dont know what goes on behind the scenes but, what is Rafas issue with Mitro? Shocking.

    • Billy Ellwood

I’d hardly call it shocking to leave out a player who just isn’t good enough, or disciplined enough to avoid sendings off or retrospective bans.

      • Mrkgw

I like Rafa (no doubt there) and get the ill discipline of Mitro but, is Shelvey (whom I rate even more highly in terms of his ability, incidentally) any better in that regard? And, he plays.

        • Billy Ellwood

Shelvey is indisciplined, but I’d say he gives more to the team. Leaving out Mitro IMO isnt shocking, but just a personal choice by Rafa.

          • Mrkgw

It is shocking when you reflect upon that toothless display tonight!

      • Andy Mac

“I’d hardly call it shocking to leave out a player who just isn’t good enough” who Mitro or Joselu ?

        • Albert Stubbins

you’re right- there’s a tab paper in it as far as ability goes between the two of them- both U.S!!

      • Mike Adam

I am sick of people like you always talking about his discipline. In Mitro’s career at NUFC he has 2 reds ( I am not counting the one given by the pundits) and 7 yellows. In the same time period, Gayle has been given 1 red and 5 yellows and Shelvey 2 reds and 18 yellows, EPL only. So why is his record always brought up? Slightly worse than Gayle and much better than Shelvey.

  • 1957

SloMo instead of Hayden is astonishing, even given Hayden’s lacklustre performance in his last game. The lack of forward options is worrying, Hoss will run about to little effect to be replaced by Gayle who will no doubt succumb to a phantom Injury after 5 minutes on the pitch.

Mitrovic and Mbemba are clearly getting the Tim Krul treatment in an effort to get them to ask to leave.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

SloMo for Hayden & Hosselu staring again, WTF going on,
    No Mitro ???

    • 1957

If I was being cynical, I would suggest Benitez doesn’t want Mitrovic, but would prefer Aleksander to submit a transfer request.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

my conclusion as well, add Mbemba to that

        • Mike Adam

Seems to me that there is some Spanish favoritism going on. IMO not a one should be starting and one or two not even on the bench.

      • Albert Stubbins

You’re six months late with the Eureka moment mate!!

      • Andy Mac

and yet the whole point of “dressing the window” is for him to play and score goals thus improving his “sellability” ?

    • Albert Stubbins

No mitro cos he’s about as likely to score as my daughter!! P.s she likes net ball.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

He`s more likely to score than Joselu, he couldnt get in the Gateshead team he`s rubbish

        • Albert Stubbins

He still gives more to the team than mitro. Both pony only Josselyn marginally less so.

          • Albert Stubbins

            Typo but suits him. Lol

          • Soldier

            rubbish

          • Mike Adam

            you know genius

      • steve

He scores a goal a game at international level

        • Albert Stubbins

There’s only four decent teams at international level. The makems would beat England, that’s how good international football is. England can’t string three passes together FFS. He’s pony. Third division standard. No touch, pass or awareness where the goal is. Makes Billy whitehurst seem cultured. I’ve seen them all and he’s arguably the worst striker wear the black and white in over thirty years no argument. Let’s leave it there it’s been done to death. Second half aboot to start.

          • steve

            Utter nonsense

          • Albert Stubbins

Name them? Who would mitro trouble?

          • Mike Adam

Really genius, I don’t think that it gets any more boring than NUFC’s last two games does it?

          • Albert Stubbins

what are you expecting with this team you mad man- its a championship team ffs. Smell the roses- this is what has to be served up with the players available to him at this present moment. we bought no one in the summer other than Merino with any quality- we are never going to be Brazil with this team. I agree that Perez and Slo mo should be dropped- ive argued this all season- but there is only so much Rafa can do with players available. Do you think brining Mitro in is going to change us to world beaters?

        • Albert Stubbins

no he doesn’t- he averages less than one in three- admittedly his recent record is better. if you’re going to quote statistics at least make them accurate. his last 14 appearances he’s scored 8 goals. 25 apps. in league for us last season- 4 goals!! if you want more stats of what a goalscoring machine Mitro is.

        • Mike Adam

Steve you can’t discuss anything with the genius, he knows what every player can do before they even get on the pitch.

      • Mike Adam

Then you keep watching Josewho and Perez genius. I cannot watch them anymore, others deserve a chance including Mitro, because your daughter scores about as often as the two Spaniards!

        • Albert Stubbins

Ok Bird Brain- it may have escaped your attention but Mitro couldn’t score in the championship ffs- what makes you think he will start ripping up trees in the premiership?- against poor defences- when he was given a chance he either missed a penalty or couldn’t score altogether. He couldn’t score with a fifty pound note hanging out of his lug in a brothel. No one is saying Josselu is the answer- he has proven to be equally bad. But with someone as ineffective as Perez behind him – Shearer would struggle as Perez creates nothing and provides nothing. Mitro isn’t the answer- we need some quality and will have to fight on until January- it won’t be pretty. Hopefully Merino will be back for next game and maybe played as a number 10- that at last would give us some attacking options.

          • Mike Adam

You are the genius! All I am saying is why not give the just turned 23 year old a chance in the battle? Yes he only scored 4 last year, but Rafa has never given him a run of games like others have received. He only played 1121 total minutes last year. That was one third to one half the minutes of most others. He was also third on the team in assists in those few minutes and even a genius like you knows that an assist is often as good or better than the goal itself! He has been successful in every other season he has ever played in, including the second leading scorer on NUFC in his first year as a 20/21 year old, two seasons at Anderlecht, and World Cup Qualifying. He has scored goals in the Champions League and has two goals this year in almost no playing time! I may be a bird brain, but you Mr. Genius know that he is not someone who can help the team, how? I guess you also said that Eden Hazard was not the answer after his 2015-16 season when he only scored 4 goals in 25 starts and 2190 minutes double what Mitro got last year. Yeah you know genius, at least I want to try a change to help us score instead of continuing to watch paint dry in the final third of the pitch! I do agree with Merino in the number 10 position though, so maybe you are part genius!

          • Albert Stubbins

Maybe Rafa is as well – as its him who picks the team and thankfully for all of us still breathing oxygen and not glue it’s not you!!

          • Mike Adam

At least I would try to make some changes! But the great Rafa puts in SLOmo and continues to watch the paint dry!!!!! I question those moves, yes! Rafa is a genius like you at setting a team up defensivly, I will never question that. But, offense, I am not near as confident in his decisions!

          • Albert Stubbins

Maybe the new consortium will consider you for the post- the fact that someone can even Mention Eden Hazard and make a comparison with Mitro kind of tells its own story- I hear the Makems may be looking for someone soon- I suggest you apply- maybe you could take them down to the old conference!!

          • Mike Adam

Oh that hurts, I will always have my opinions and you will have yours. I am just happy that I am on this side of the discussion because there is no sane reason in the world not to give this kid a run of some games to see what he could do, this year. My point about Hazard was not to compare the players genius, it was to point out that one season doesn’t make a player!

          • Albert Stubbins

no but three does!! Mitro has been consistently bad for us. If passion and love of the club equated to ability he’d be better than Shearer- unfortunately it doesn’t.

          • Albert Stubbins

having a no.9 that can actually find the net helps- Rafa hasn’t got that- that’s why he’s so defensive imo.

          • Mike Adam

Why do you hate Mitro, he can’t do any worse that the great Josewho, why not give him a chance?, that is all.

          • Albert Stubbins

I don’t hate Mitro. I like him- but he’s U.S. He has been given umpteen chances and blown them. Josselu is also poor I agree but was bought for cover. Why not bring Armstrong back- another plank. we have very few options up front and even Gayle is devoid of any confidence- but that is why we are setting up not to concede and hopefully pinch one the other end. Its been the same the whole season- why do people only complain when we lose that’s what I want to know?

          • Mike Adam

You are wrong, he has not been given the chances you say! And again, you keep pointing to last year. He never got near the run of games that Josewho has gotten this year. How can you say that because he only scored 4 goals last year at the age of 21/22, (don’t forget third on the team in assists), that he cannot help this year?

          • Albert Stubbins

why do you keep mentioning his age? George Best played for his national team at 17- Michael Own made his first team debut at 17. What is the point you’re (badly) trying to make here? that he’s just a kid? are you on the same planet as the rest of us here or what? As for not been giving chances- incredible- I saw most of them live last season and it wasn’t pretty- missed penalties, open goals the lot. it was terrible to watch- painful even as we all feel for him I will agree with you there. You’re p******g in the wind with this one I’m afraid.

  • RunforPavel47

That bench looks weak as ive ever seen it, hope we don’t need any super subs tonight.Hayden be dropped as he is on a yellow away from a ban.

    • Alreet

Dont agree. Gayle. Murphy even clarke is a match winner.

      • RunforPavel47

No goals, between them this season never mind a match winner. Rafa needs a new plan for Bournemouth as this game was dire.

      • Mike Adam

        Nope

  • Gary McCarron

I was looking forward to tonight………..now I’m not so sure, Diame?

    • Andy Mac

Wish I’d known before I set off for the bar !

  • Alreet

The big absentees mitro and merino. Mitro left out because gayle is back but having saivet on the bench as well as hayden is a tough on to read. I know hes one yellow short of a match ban but really….saivet.

Merino must have illness or something like a twist of an ankle to not be included at all. Hes been a little dynamo in the middle.

Anyhoo. Rafa knows best. Set them up and pack the midfield.

  • Martin Rooney

Makes no sense but then I often can’t work Rafa out and he proves me wrong. No defensive midfielder, a cm who can’t tackle two true wingers, two number tens and a striker who can’t score. Think I’ll lists to John A rava than now tv.

  • Soldier

As Carra says on sky, championship players with a champions league manager thats why they are where they are. can`t argue with that i`m afraid when i see the likes of Joselu, Perez, Diame etc playing

  • Brazilian John

I can’t believe that Mitrovic is worse than Joselu!

    • Biggs

      He isnt

      • Brazilian John

Mitro is always playing for the National team, doing his goals… and never being our target man!
        I can’t understand!

      • 1957

Except it seems in the world of Benitez and his staff…Hoss being a Benitez buy might have something to do with it and he always gives his choices plenty of opportunity.

        • Brazilian John

You’re right! Now I see things a little bit different..

  • Biggs

Yedlin has had 3 great opportunities to put a cross in and has pot them all in the keepers hands. If he’s gonna do that he might as well take a shot

    • steve

Why is Joselu running behind the keeper instead of across the front post though.

      • TheNutJob

        he`s nowhere to be seen

      • 1957

        He doesn’t have a clue

  • TheNutJob

the quality of football is shocking by both sides, once again Perez & Joselu have given the team nothing

  • Asen Aleksiev

it is amazing how come every game we play on the road we are one goal away from defeat

  • Asen Aleksiev

this is horrible to watch, really horrible manner

    • Brazilian John

We really need some investment during the transfer window in January!!!

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

how can we recover from a goal down when we have Perez & Joselu as a strike force. both of them are a waste of a shirt.
Rafa`s got to drop them on Saturday and don`t mention SloMo

  • Tino o

Benitez has got everything wrong tonight selection and subs

    • Gary McCarron

      apparently “in Rafa we trust”……hmmm

  • fistsofsteel2

Losing faith in Rafa. His treatment of Mitrovic is shocking, while he’ll tolerate C-list players like Joselu and Gayle. Merino on the bench the past couple of games is also an odd and extremely negative decision.
Rafa seems to go into every game – no matter what the opposition, trying to hang on for a draw. Hope we get beat off Burnley……..the terrible team selection warrants it.

    • Albert Stubbins

Losing faith in rafa? Are you nuts? Who should we get in this fantasy world you are clearly living in. Give Ferguson a ring and ask him nicely then.

      • fistsofsteel2

Admit it we’ve been pretty lucky so far this season. All this ‘in Rafa we trust’ baloney is wishful thinking. He is not beyond criticism. Blindly placing him on a pedestal is foolish.

Don’t forget we haven’t played many of the top teams yet. We will rapidly slip down the table if the team stick to Rafa’s tactic of ‘defend, defend, defend, and hope to get lucky on the break’. He goes into games – even against bottom of the league Palace, thinking ‘if we can just hang on’……showing poor sides far too much respect.

As for Gayle, and Joselu: Do you think they’ll score ten goals between them this season?

        • Albert Stubbins

That’s because of Rafa – we are a well organized championship side – well organised but lacking a goal threat- Rafa sets up with this side to not concede and hopefully pinch one at the other end- he’s getting the very best out of the players available to him. No- Gayle and Josselu won’t score ten goals between them- that is why when in the summer Rafa first thought he had some money he was going to Sell Gayle- he knows he couldn’t cut it at premiership level. Josselu was a last minute signing to add some supposed height – Rafa wouldn’t have normally bought Josselu in a million years but needed some cover.

    • Keeganontherebound

Merino is injured and it’s thanks to Gayle’s goals we are in the premiership.

    • Down Under Mag

You want us to get beat? Well congrats you got your wish. You call yourself a fan and WANT your team to get beat just so you can say I told you so?? Shame!

  • Tino o

If there is a poll for the worst match ever to be shown live this gets my vote

    • Fufulala

No bro. Against crystal palace is the worst one!

  • Asen Aleksiev

brighton, huddersfield, burnle, no difference and no step ahead in what we saw as previous away games this campaign. One goal and we’re done

    • RAFmag

Definitely a worrying trend against poor teams. Dread going to better teams.

  • Andy Mac

“83 minutes Newcastle have tried the long-ball a few times this evening but Joselu
was isolated. With Gayle alongside him, Newcastle are starting to look
like more of a threat” ? Did Rafa think we were playing Citeh tonight ? 🤔

  • Gary McCarron

Another Monday night defeat to add to the stats!!!

  • Andy Mac

    Possession Home47% Away53%
Our game plan is to let them have the ball. Their game plan was to give us the ball and we did F all with it ?

  • Danimal

I love Rafa but the Mitrovic thing is baffling. His beautifully taken goal against West Ham should have been lift-off. Instead it’s been the end of his career with us.

    • Mrkgw

      Agreed.

  • Leicester Mag

Well that’s 2 hours of life we will not get back. Difficult to fathom the team selection tonight. Maybe Mitrovic isn’t the answer but his international record and club record suggests he’s a better bet than Joselu. As for Diame he’s so slow I was blaming Sky because I thought he was buffering.

    • Andy Mac

I’m just trying to think why Rafa chose that team/squad ? Was he trying to prove a point to Fatman ?

    • 1957

Couldn’t agree more, Mitrovic may not be the answer, but he is more likely to get a goal than Hoss, but Benitez has decided he doesn’t want him and won’t give him a run of games no matter what.

Benitez is stubborn and will select certain players, even if they are planks, SloMo is the shining example of this for me.

  • Kev-82

If Joselu & Perez is the answer what the hell is the question? In this formation you can’t have 2 players in those 2 roles that aren’t going to get and create you goals. Yes you can blame the recruitment for that but we need to try something different till January. Luckily we’ve not had too bad a start but our luck won’t last forever.
