Burnley 1 Newcastle 0 – Monday 30 October 2017 8pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Ben Cooper:

“That was just plain rubbish.

“Not a single player on the pitch could pass the ball.

“It makes you wonder how both sides are top half PL teams.

“I know we have a young team playing above themselves but that was unwatchable.

“It might seem churlish to pick on anyone in particular after such a waste of time but two players in particular, Diame and Murphy, had the opportunity to prove a point today.

“Go on lads, show us what you can do! Ok then, don’t bother. A complete waste of my time.”

Scott:

“Disappointing off night.

“I aint gonna rant over this.

“Internet forums and Twitter having a complete meltdown.

“Not getting involved in it.

“Too many sofa managers bashing at keyboards.

“We will have more good than bad under Rafa.”

Jamie Smith:

“This was always going to be a one goal maximum outcome.

“Perez’ weakness in losing the ball was frustrating but overall it has to be said it was the worst game of the season.

“Every time you get a bit carried away it’s not far off the reminder of how weak our squad is in several places.

“Very frustrating but always a potential outcome.

“If it was us that snatched the rubbish goal you’d have taken it.”

Jamie Swan:

“Grim viewing as a spectacle, with two very similarly matched teams.

“Nowt new learned tonight that we didn’t all know already.

“Worked their socks off at the back and defensively as a team – but sadly the Spanish front two are so far off the pace offensively.

“John Lennon wanted Peace to be given a chance – I’m hoping Rafa after tonight will give Mitro a chance!

“At both full-backs we are lacking real quality and more importantly balance.

“Diame… Well he blootered around like the Stay Puft Marshmallow man on Valium.

“Merino hopefully will be back pronto and no way should Hayden make way for that gargantuan galoot again.

“We don’t look like conceding many but when we do, we don’t look capable of turning it around.

“Not going to hoy the bairn out with the bath water, and Rafa will know what he needs to do, and who he can get to sort it.

“Let’s hope this week brings some good news on the takeover and some loot is on the horizon for the main man. He can only play poker with the hand he’s got.”

David Punton:

“Really poor display tonight, one of our worst under Benitez.

“A performance devoid of any real attacking intent.

“Ninth after ten games we’d all have taken, but there is a sense there was a bit of a missed opportunity here tonight, against a Burnley side without their top striker.

“Perez, Joselu, Diame and Manquillo were all poor.

“Joselu has a great attitude but has not really seized his chance to lead the line. Mitrovic surely deserves a run out?

“More attacking play needed against Bournemouth this weekend is sorely needed.

“Verdict: A setback.”

Toon Bano:

“I won’t complain after a game like that, as I understand what Rafa is doing in away games and our pressing was very impressive.

“We also looked comfortable playing it out from the back which is a cracking combination.

“However, I cannot let it slide that Rafa, for some nonsensical reason, has brought Diame back into our lives? Why?

“If it was for his strength, well Hayden is no slouch is he? Hayden started the last two games ahead of Merino…!!

“Diame proved to be an absolute liability, yet was the last player to be dragged off? How is this possible?

“Perez made a mistake for the goal but it happens.

“To take his pace and threat off, as well as Ritchie, before Diame, is bordering on taking the p…

“Anyway, we didn’t deserve to lose but it’s another 1-0 loss away from home on Sky against a poor team.

“Annoying but not fatal.”

Paul Lyon:

“We were in a game in the first half and I was happy to go in level at half time.

“2nd half was a different story, Burnley changed tactics and went route 1 and we struggled to cope with it.

“Felt we were generally toothless throughout in a game that was there for the taking.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“One of those tight games we were due to lose.

“Lejune and Manquillo were excellent throughout.

“Didn’t understand the Diame selection, thought he was poor throughout.

“We need to counter-attack better in these types of games, going forward we were worse than in our last defeat against Brighton.

“Poor really, but we move on, and if we win on Saturday things will still be looking good for survival.”

Nat Seaton:

“Poor game, poor performance.

“Two very similar team set-ups and neither side with the quality to break it down.

“We had absolutely nothing in the last third and go home with no points and without really troubling their keeper.

“Here’s hoping for a better game at home on Saturday…”

Paul Patterson:

“The lack of a No.10 and a centre forward couldn’t be more obvious…”
