Difficult to see how things could get any worse for Achraf Lazaaar.
The left-back was bought by Rafa Benitez in summer 2016 as a solution to hopefully fill the long-term problem position at left-back.
However, 46 Championship matches later, the Moroccan international hadn’t started a single one.
Getting only 36 minutes in four brief substitute appearances, it was obvious he had to move on.
With nobody prepared to buy him, Achraf Lazaar moved back to Serie A with newly promoted Benevento for an initial year’s loan.
The team started the season badly but at least Lazaar was getting regular football, even though it was in a more advanced left wing position.
However, it is now a month since the Newcastle player’s last start and despite Benevento continuing to lose, there is no sign of him getting back into the team.
The Italian club have now lost all eight league games and sit rock bottom of Serie A with zero points.
Monday night saw Benevento provide Rafa Benitez’ former assistant, Fabio Pecchia, with some much needed relief.
It was Hellas Verona’s first win of the season and Achraf Lazaar didn’t even get onto the pitch.
It looks certain that the full-back will be back at Newcastle next summer and it remains to be seen if NUFC will try and engineer a loan deal at another club in January, if Lazaar continues to be left out at Benevento.
