Who are the worst ever Premier League strikers?

With over 25 years worth to choose from, there are plenty of candidates.

In a list of the worst ever, it is ‘nice’ to see Newcastle United represented so well…

The Mail have put together their list of the worst PL forwards and counting down, they have just named five one-time Newcastle strikers included in the positions from 80 to 61.

Here are the five NUFC former ‘stars’ they have included:

77 – Nile Ranger

‘Ranger, who has been arrested more times than he has scored in the Premier League, is certainly one of the more colourful characters to have graced the league.

As a youngster in the Newcastle academy, Ranger was handed plenty of opportunities after helping the club to promotion from the Championship in 2010.

But after no goals in 26 Premier League games, Ranger’s off-field problems eventually caught up with him and he departed by mutual consent in March 2013.’

75 – Luuk de Jong

‘A prolific goalscorer at Twente who had lost his way at Borussia Monchengladbach, Newcastle were hoping to rejuvenate De Jong when he arrived in January 2014.

His loan spell turned out to be a disaster, as he failed to find the net once in 12 appearances under Alan Pardew.

He has since been racking up the goals for PSV back in Holland, with 54 in 97 games.’

71 – Michael Chopra

‘The Newcastle academy product famously pitched up at newly-promoted Sunderland in a £5m deal in 2007.

It was a high price at the time, but he failed to live up to the promise under Roy Keane, scoring eight in 39 after finding the net just once in the Premier League for his boyhood club.

He finally found success with Cardiff in the Championship but now turns out for Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League.’

67 – Shefki Kuqi

‘The Finland striker was something of a Football League journeyman, though his various forays into the Premier League brought little success.

Despite standing at 6ft 2in, the bulky hitman scored only seven times in his one season at Ewood Park, mostly finding himself on the bench.

Kuqi failed to find the net in 10 appearances on loan at Fulham in 2007, nor in six games for Newcastle when he was recruited to replace the Liverpool-bound Andy Carroll in 2011.’

61 – Andreas Andersson

‘Despite a failed spell at AC Milan in 1997-98, Newcastle decided Andersson’s impressive goalscoring record at Gothenburg was worth the risk.

But the Swede never really stood a chance with Alan Shearer in his way.

He was meant to be Kenny Dalglish’s Tino Asprilla replacement, but he netted just twice in 18 matches before being shipped of to AIK Solna.’

They miss the small matter that Chopra’s only Premier League goal for Newcastle came within 10 seconds of coming onto the pitch against Sunderland, helping to change what turned out to be Alan Shearer’s very final match, from a potential disaster to a 4-1 hammering of Sunderland.

Who would be your worst ever Newcastle United strikers in this Premier League era?

  • Paul Patterson

No Stephane Guivarch? No Albert Luque?

  • Mark G Walker

i think you’re forgetting Luque and Xisco!!??

  • Kneebotherm8

Doumbia,Ferreyra? Oh, I’m forgetting, they never actually played for us.
Jon Dahl Tomasson wasn’t great for us,but excelled at other clubs.

  • Mxpx

    Patrick kluivert

    • Karl Craig

Don’t be so daft. Kluivert had one season with us in which he scored 13 goals in about 30 starts. He was an absolute class act at his best.

      • Mxpx

He scored less goals in the same number of appearances than shola ameobi did the year before playing up top with shearer his record is 6/26 sure not the worst we’ve had but I’m giving him the biggest disappointment tag

  • Gallowgate Dave

A free, 2 academy players, a loan and a signing that didn’t exactly break the bank but no Luque, Guivarch and arguably if we are judging pound for pound Owen too. It depends on the context of the article I suppose but given the money the latter 3 cost in transfer fees and wages I’d judge them a lot more harshly than the ones named so far in the article. Presumably they’ll make the top 20 when it’s published.

  • Oooh

    Facundo Ferreyra, Emmanuel Riviere.

  • Peaky Magpie

So there’s 66 worse strikers than Kuqi coming up,this should be interesting.

  • Jimblag23

Carl Cort? I seem to remember one season when he was our top scorer with 6 goals. Or have a created that in mind? It doesn’t sound right.

  • Alreet

Staphane Guivarch fresh from the world cup with france. Looked as mobile as lead and twice as thick.

Albert Luque. What a lovely time we had waiting for him to be the next tino.

Riviere has to be on the list. He got more starts than most but only got one goal aall season.

Stop press……. sediou Dumbia. We have to have a winner there if he never played.

  • Rich Lawson

Ranger ”arrested more times than he scored in the premier league”,brilliant !
