Welcome to the world of Mark Lawrenson, Paul Merson, and Michael Owen.
All continuing to make a living via their ‘expert’ views on Premier League football.
Last season, the drop to the Championship saw David Prutton the one to predict Newcastle United’s chances each week for Sky Sports.
It became apparent that on a regular basis he was deliberately forecasting Newcastle not to win as it got him more headlines and raised his profile, which would be a major bonus to him as nobody knew who he was.
That is not the case with Owen, Merson and Lawrenson, so what is their excuse?
You can’t help but feel that for the three of them it is at least in part, wishful thinking. A bit like Mark Lawrenson embarrassingly predicting Liverpool to not lose a single match last season, deciding on who won’t win/who you don’t want to win, must also at least subconsciously play a part.
How else can you explain that this trio have made 22 Newcastle predictions in total this season and not a singe one of those was for NUFC to win?
Predictions from Mark Lawrenson, Paul Merson, and Michael Owen, this season:
Newcastle 0 Tottenham 2 – All 3 predicted Newcastle to lose.
Huddersfield 1 Newcastle 0 – Merson & Lawrenson predicted draw, no prediction from Owen.
Newcastle 3 West Ham 0 – Merson predicted Newcastle lose, Lawrenson a draw, no prediction from Owen.
Swansea 1 Newcastle 0 – All 3 predicted Newcastle to lose.
Newcastle 2 Stoke 1 – All 3 predicted a draw.
Brighton 1 Newcastle 0 – Lawrenson predicted Newcastle to lose, Owen & Merson a draw.
Newcastle 1 Liverpool 1 – All 3 predicted Newcastle to lose.
Southampton v Newcastle – Owen predicts a draw, Lawrenson & Merson Newcastle to lose.
The final scores in the expert predictions:
Mark Lawrenson: Newcastle to win 0, draw 3, lose 5.
Michael Owen: Newcastle to win 0, draw 3, lose 3.
Paul Merson: Newcastle to win 0, draw 3, lose 5.
Overall outcome: 22 predictions – 0 wins, 9 draws, 13 defeats.
All three of them would have had Newcastle bottom of the league at this point with their predictions.
Another chance to prove them wrong today at Southampton.
