Achraf Lazaaar was bought by Rafa Benitez in summer 2016 as a solution to hopefully fill the long-term problem position at left-back.

However, 46 Championship matches later, the Moroccan international hadn’t started a single one.

Getting only 36 minutes in four brief substitute appearances, it was obvious he had to move on.

With nobody prepared to buy him, Achraf Lazaar moved back to Serie A with newly promoted Benevento for an initial year’s loan.

Earlier today Achraf Lazaar got his second start in a row having been left out for over a month.

It proved to be a small milestone for the Newcastle loan player but another disaster for Benevento.

With visitors Lazio already 3-0 up, in the 55th minute Achraf Lazaar’s moment came.

Playing left wing-back/winger , the Moroccan international cut the ball back onto his right foot and produced a smart finish (watch it below), his first goal since January 2016.

Sadly, it was only a small moment of joy for Benevento, who went on to then concede two more goals and were beaten 5-1 at home.

The Italian club have now lost all 11 league games and sit rock bottom of Serie A with zero points, Lazaar’s goal is one of only four scored, with 29 conceded.

It looks certain that the full-back will be back at Newcastle next summer with Benevento looking set to create new records in Serie A, as they make a swift return to Serie B.
