Paul Merson has been looking ahead to Sunday afternoon’s match.

The former Middlesbrough player actually praising Rafa Benitez’ team, saying ‘Newcastle had a superb result against West Ham’.

After games against other likely bottom half candidates Huddersfield and West Ham, Newcastle now face Swansea, Stoke and Brighton, clubs who are also likely to be nearer the bottom than the top in May.

However, Paul Merson thinks ‘Premier League class will show in this one’.

Unfortunately he is not referring to the likes of Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark and Jonjo Shelvey.

Merson predicts a 2-0 home win and declares ‘Swansea have been there and done it and will have too much for Newcastle’.

As poor as West Ham were two weekends ago, you have to feel that Newcastle showed enough to give Swansea a good game.

Results haven’t been great in recent years with the last four visits seeing three defeats and one draw – but Newcastle must fancy their chances of getting something.

Paul Merson speaking to Sky Sports:

“Swansea made a few additions on Deadline Day and that will have lifted the club.

“I didn’t think they were great against Palace but did what they had to do.

“I’m looking forward to watching Renato Sanches. If he gets anywhere near to the form he showed at Euro 2016 everybody in Europe will be thinking: “How did Swansea get him?”

“Obviously it’s because of Paul Clement, who was Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at Bayern Munich so fair play to him, it’s an excellent signing.

“Newcastle had a superb result against West Ham but I think the Premier League class will show in this one.

“Swansea have been there and done it and will have too much for Newcastle.”

Swansea have been there and done it? What’s he on about? Talking like this is Newcastles first ever campaign in the PL. this is Swansea not Man Utd. The mans and idiot and gets payed to talk BS.

    • Soldier

Merson`s an idiot, but West Ham are no Man U either & Swansea at home will be a tougher match than the hammers

Steve Pearce predicts that nobody gives a flying Donald Duck what Paul Merson has to say…

I just love that photo – what a dork! He was a good player in his day but as a pundit his main role is to be the butt-end of Jeff Stelling`s jokes. Swansea will go into this game as favourites but there`s no foregone conclusion. I fancy a bit of a Huddersfield away from last season and a 0-0 or 1-1 draw. You can but hope.

The guy is an idiot but in the star sixes and that Grendel game, some of his passes were beautiful.
Sky should still get rid of the moron.

  • GToon

He’s probably all of the things listed below but if I had to put my mortgage on this game I wouldn’t be betting on us either.

  • Monkseaton Magpies

Is still taking drugs, spending all his money and drinking himself to death it looks like it.

      Transfermarkt agrees.

I actually like Paul Merson. I think he speaks a lot of sense, regardless of what people think about his past habits.
I don’t always agree with him but he generally tries to give a reasonable opinion on most games.

I never like to share in anyone’s assessment of our games if they go against my positive outlook on them, no matter who we play…but then again, I’m totally biased when it comes to Newcastle United and let my heart rule my head.

Its just as well you let your heart rule your head…. your head is empty.
