Paul Merson has picked out the influential players from Sunday’s contest between Swansea City and Newcastle United.

Merson choosing a ‘Fantasy Football 6-a-side-team’.

The Sky Sports pundit says ‘I fancy Swansea to win this’.

Accordingly he has gone for four Swansea players and only two from Newcastle.

For the hosts he has chosen Tammy Abraham, who Mike Ashley blocked Rafa Benitez from bringing in on loan at the start of the transfer window.

Then Paul Merson has also gone for Midfielder Tom Carroll, centre-back Alfie Mawson, and forward Jordan Ayew.

You do get the feeling that when Merson is talking about Newcastle he usually hasn’t got a clue and it is very doubtful whether he actually watches many/any NUFC matches.

He goes for Jonjo Shelvey, who is very unlikely to play after disappointing on the opening day and then getting sent off, with Hayden and Merino doing well in his absence.

His other choice is Ayoze Perez who Merson reckons is one of Newcastle’s ‘better players’, whereas the reality is that the Spaniard is one of the, if not the, weakest players in the team.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“My elite player is Tammy Abraham.

“I watched him against Palace and he got his first Premier League goal. So I think that will give him all the confidence to kick on.

I fancy Swansea to win this, so I have gone (midfielder) Tom Carroll – who is a good player.

“Jordan Ayew – he was a threat last week (in 2-0 win at Palace).

“The kid (central defender Alfie) Mawson – I think he is one of those lads that when he comes up for a set-play, he always looks like he wants to score a goal. I have seen centre-backs and you have thought ‘What are you coming up for, you get nowhere near anything’.

“And then (Jonjo) Shelvey back and I think (Ayoze) Perez is one of their better players.

“But I do expect Swansea just to nick it.”

  • Paul Busby

Ayoze has had a very poor start to the season and Shelvey might not even make it back into the squad straight away, so I guess it shows what he really knows (F-all).

If he had a grain of rice worth of knowledge of the Newcastle squad, he would have picked Richie and Clark, perhaps Atsu.

  • Rich Lawson

His whole life is a fkn ”fantasy”

  • Leazes Ender

    Why the Merson obsession?

    • Rich Lawson

Just why Merson ? would cover it.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

would you prefer to have Prutton back

  • Paul Patterson

Obviously had a little snifter before making his comments . .

  • Steve Pearce

The fantasy is that Paul Merson is a well respected, rational, sober and intelligent figure from the world of football whose every word drips with sheer wisdom!

“Tammy Abraham, who Mike Ashley blocked Rafa Benitez from bringing in on loan at the start of the transfer window.”

I`ve asked before, do you know that he blocked it, Graham? The story seemed to be that the deal was agreed but Abraham preferred to go to Swansea because he was promised first team starts (and knew the manager). I detest ashley as much as the next man (except Clarko and Bobbi, of course) but let`s try and be objective!

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

the other version is Barnes blocked it through financial reasons & if you look at what followed it`s plausible that he did

      • 1957

There’s a third version, Bobbi thinks Benitez pulled the plug on the deal because he was unhappy with Abraham’s financial demands

      • Wor Lass

Quite possible, of course, but he`s stating it as fact when I don`t think he actually knows.

    • 1957

It’s just a throwaway line cut and pasted into any story by a Mag staff writer on transfers…

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Do you leave your best player on the bench & play a lad who`s had 1 impressive game at home to a West Ham team that was pure shyte
well owt can happen at Nufc

    • ghostrider

It’s a conundrum that has to be solved, because stuff like this can make or break players.

  • ghostrider

Shelvey can make us tick as well as him having his own ticks.
Merino would be unlucky if he was dropped.
I think Shelvey will play, but maybe a sub role, whilst Merino gets the Lions share or maybe, somehow both might play.
As for Ayoze, he’s what I would describe as a borx orv chorcolartes…you never know what you’re gonna gert.

  • tonytoon

Abraham, Ayew, Carroll, Mawson- their star players? I suddenly feel more confident. Richie, Atsu, Clark, Lejeune can handle them.

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

Ayoze Perez is a likable kid, and seems to love the club, but he’s not one of our better players. Certainly not the worst in the starting 11 though. That’d be Manquillo.

    • Jimblag23

He seems ok so far though, especially against WH.
