Paul Merson has picked out the influential players from Sunday’s contest between Swansea City and Newcastle United.
Merson choosing a ‘Fantasy Football 6-a-side-team’.
The Sky Sports pundit says ‘I fancy Swansea to win this’.
Accordingly he has gone for four Swansea players and only two from Newcastle.
For the hosts he has chosen Tammy Abraham, who Mike Ashley blocked Rafa Benitez from bringing in on loan at the start of the transfer window.
Then Paul Merson has also gone for Midfielder Tom Carroll, centre-back Alfie Mawson, and forward Jordan Ayew.
You do get the feeling that when Merson is talking about Newcastle he usually hasn’t got a clue and it is very doubtful whether he actually watches many/any NUFC matches.
He goes for Jonjo Shelvey, who is very unlikely to play after disappointing on the opening day and then getting sent off, with Hayden and Merino doing well in his absence.
His other choice is Ayoze Perez who Merson reckons is one of Newcastle’s ‘better players’, whereas the reality is that the Spaniard is one of the, if not the, weakest players in the team.
Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:
“My elite player is Tammy Abraham.
“I watched him against Palace and he got his first Premier League goal. So I think that will give him all the confidence to kick on.
“I fancy Swansea to win this, so I have gone (midfielder) Tom Carroll – who is a good player.
“Jordan Ayew – he was a threat last week (in 2-0 win at Palace).
“The kid (central defender Alfie) Mawson – I think he is one of those lads that when he comes up for a set-play, he always looks like he wants to score a goal. I have seen centre-backs and you have thought ‘What are you coming up for, you get nowhere near anything’.
“And then (Jonjo) Shelvey back and I think (Ayoze) Perez is one of their better players.
“But I do expect Swansea just to nick it.”
