The transfer window finally closed at 11pm on Thursday night and Paul Merson has been judging the business done at Newcastle United and the rest of the other Premier League clubs.

Deadline day saw much speculation but no signings added to the six already made by Rafa Benitez, though Achraf Lazaar and Tim Krul were confirmed in the final minutes of the window as having signed on loan for Benevento and Brighton respectively.

Paul Merson on NUFC:

“I thought Newcastle were going to have a real go after getting promoted.

“They have got an unbelievable manager in Rafa Benitez, but I don’t think they’ve done enough to give him the squad he needs.

“I look at the players that have come in and they are not for me.”

  • Leicester Mag

Had assumed he gave a C because he didn’t know what came after it in the alphabet

  • Soldier

    It should be a D

    • Geordiegiants

      It should be a Z

      • Dave Mitchison

It would be better being an F followed by U.CK off Fatty.

  • Leazes Ender

“I thought Newcastle were going to have a real go after getting promoted”….. and so did a lot of people who joined the ‘Rafalution’ and bought season tickets…. funnily the word Rafalution has been dropped on Stadia advertising.

What is the scale of Russian Roulette that Ashley plays this time?….. he ‘s betting that Brighton or Bournemouth or Burnley don’t play out of their level.

When does the Squad Value table get updated? We were 16th before yesterdays flurry of inactivity.

  • Wor Lass

Never have the predictors of doom and gloom been so spectacularly … right! This window should just about guarantee Rafa`s departure at the earliest available opportunity and noone will be able to blame him. The fat man has screwed us yet again.

  • Geordiegiants

    Has Jabba died yet?

    • Georgia Peter

      Porciestreet;
      Not yet……..Buy I’m workin on it…!

      • Geordiegiants

        Work faster!

  • phil

The fans and Rafa didn’t get what we wanted or needed. But Rafa is one of the best managers around and I think he will be able to get the best out of what we have in the squad.
It all depends on how our luck pans out with injuries because our first 11 is ok but after that we are screwed

  • Jezza

I genuinely believe in terms of what we needed and what we ended up getting that we have had the worst transfer window of any team in the league. As pathetic as it was predictable.

    • phil

Do you think we will stay up?
I honestly do. But it all depends on Rafa staying. Which I think he will till the end of the season. Purely because of his relationship with the fans. He seems a good bloke and i don’t think he would walk out when he knows what the consequences of that would be for us

      • Jezza

Put it this way even if Rafa was to stay for the full season he’d have a hell of a task on his hands to keep this squad up.

        • magpiefifer

The next 8 games are going to tell us a lot as we’ll be playing most of the teams who you would expect to be fighting against relegation.

    • Peter Stabler

You should have bet me Jezza, I convinced myself we could get a third choice left back but I was wrong (shakes head)

  • Steve Pearce

I’ve got two things to say to Paul Merson – they are about sex and travel…

    • Jimblag23

Paul can’t get it up after too many lines of chang.

  • Doug Dacre

Paul Merson, Really??? Is that the best you can do???
Come on Mag spin something positive for a change, this is becoming silly, and you are starting to sound like the southern press, have you sold out to the Mirror Group Too???
Personally would have liked to have also seen the addition of a decent left back but the 6 brought in look good to me especially Lejeune who looks to be a real find.
Also can’t disagree with any of the ones moved out, and they deserve a medal for getting money for Hanley!!!

  • HenrySlade

Merson may be a gibbering halfwit who never has a good word to say about Newcastle, but this time I think he’s being rather generous to us. He’s graded us alongside Stoke, who’ve brought in quite a few good players, and gave us a higher mark than Arsenal who paid a club-record fee of £46.5 million for Lacazette.

  • Georgia Peter

    Porciestreet;
Wow, just looked at the table and if we win @ Swansea, we could be in the top 6.

  • Peaky Magpie

Is that the ghost of Jack Duckworth in the photo above ???

  • HappyToons

Wakes up after a short summer siesta, excited on how many players we bought with that expected £80 million transfer budget, has a look, then back into hibernation, probably for a decade.
