Newcastle v Brighton player ratings as voted by fans – Weaknesses identified?

The results of the Newcastle v Brighton player ratings by fans.

They say that sometimes you find out more in adversity…

Only two players managed marks of over 7.0 and can’t argue with that.

Mikel Merino (7.4) was top rated by fans and deservedly so, pretty much any positive stuff from Newcastle came through him.

In truth, Brighton should have been ahead by half-time and it was Rob Elliot (7.1) deserving most praise for the fact they didn’t score, could do nothing about the goal.

Interested to see that the next highest mark was given to Jonjo Shelvey (6.3) who was only on the pitch for 22 minutes. Little wonder as he did help to make Newcastle look a whole lot better in the final stages, on top of his passing, he also almost scored but saw his corner come back off the post.

Only one other player managed a mark over 6.0 and that was the ever dependable Ciaran Clark (6.2), not at his best but still easily Newcastle’s best defender, as is the case 90% or more of the time.

At the other of the spectrum, you have a trio of players who all must be sweating on their place for Liverpool.

The front pair of Joselu (3.8) and Ayoze Perez (3.9) were totally anonymous and showed little hope of working openings/chances between the two of them. Joselu put a good close range chance wide, whilst as so many times in his Newcastle career so far, you forget Perez is even on the pitch for much of the game.

Isaac Hayden (4.7) is the third of the poor performers, wasn’t great against Swansea or Stoke but did just about enough to keep his place, time though surely now to look at taking him out of the firing line – especially with Shelvey ready and waiting.

The other five starters were much of a muchness, Mbemba and Ritchie the best of them with 5.9 each, as they stuck to their task.

Yedlin (5.8) did ok and was put under pressure quite a bit with high balls, whilst Lascelles (5.5) dropped his standards and was partly to blame for the goal, especially giving away the unnecessary free-kick.

Christian Atsu (5.1) started quite well and then faded, leaving us wondering just how much of the good and bad we will see from him this season, as his performances wildly fluctuate.
