Mikel Merino picks up first Newcastle United award but it won’t be the last
Mikel Merino has been named the Newcastle fans’ player of the month for August.
A short cameo off the bench against Spurs, was then followed with a very good game against Huddersfield – though he was at fault for the goal, with then a dominant midfield display in the 3-0 win over West Ham.
He then of course was one of the main men in Sunday’s victory in Wales but that will be part of September’s deliberation.
Ciaran Clark and Christian Atsu were the other two nominations but the 21 year old Spaniard won the fan vote with 45% support.
Newcastle United official announcement:
Mikel Merino is the FUN88 player of the month for August.
The Spanish midfielder has made a superb start to his Newcastle career following his season-long loan move from Borussia Dortmund, and beat off competition from Ciaran Clark and Christian Atsu to win the award.
Thousands of supporters voted and Merino came out on top with 45 per cent of the vote. He will be presented with his trophy ahead of Saturday’s game against Stoke City.
One lucky fan will get the chance to hand the prize over to Merino at St. James’ Park at the weekend.
