Despite beating West Ham 3-0 the game before, in the build-up to the Swansea game last weekend, Michael Owen predicted an easy victory for the home side.
On top of that, the former Newcastle players also said ‘I really fear for Newcastle and the signs from manager Rafa Benitez aren’t good’.
A week later and in the top half of the Premier League after making it consecutive wins, Newcastle’s health, like that of the manager’s, is looking very much on the up.
Nobody is suggesting NUFC are world beaters but the results and performances against the Swans and the Hammers, suggests Newcastle should be able to give most PL clubs a decent game.
Michael Owen though once again doesn’t see a win for Newcastle, so a near three year record won’t be broken.
It is actually just short of three years since United won three Premier League games on the bounce.
It was under our old mate and chancer, Alan Pardew, a disastrous start to the season then saw Pardew somehow fluke a three game winning run, which then became four and finally, five.
Between 18 October 2014 and 22 November 2014, NUFC beat Leicester, Spurs, Liverpool, West Brom and QPR.
Alan Pardew won only two other Premier League matches with Newcastle that season and jumped ship to Crystal Palace, leaving it to John Carver to have the honour of trying to relegate the club once again under Mike Ashley. Despite only three wins in 19 PL games under Carver, Newcastle stayed up on the final day with that Jonas Gutierrez inspired 2-0 win over West Ham.
It would be a massive boost for everybody connected with Newcastle if they overcome Stoke but Michael Owen thinks a draw is on the cards.
Since losing to Everton on the opening day, Stoke are unbeaten in four games (all competitions) and that includes beating Arsenal and becoming the first to take points off Man Utd this season with that exciting 2-2 draw last weekend.
A draw wouldn’t be a disaster but another three points to welcome Rafa back to the dugout would be very nice.
“Newcastle v Stoke.
“The hosts will be looking to win three PL games on the run for the first time in nearly three years.
“But Stoke are unbeaten in their last four and will be hard to beat.
“I believe they will get a point at St James’s Park.”
“Michael Owen recommendation: Game to finish in a draw at 9/4.”
