Using our interactive feature, NUFC team selector, supporters have chosen their Newcastle team v Liverpool.

The result and much of the performance against Brighton, prompting Newcastle fans to consider shaking things up in the starting line-up.

Starting at the back though, fans have overwhelmingly gone for no change, with Elliot unopposed in goal, and the back four of Mbemba, Clark, Lascelles and Yedlin similarly with no real competition.

Rafa confirmed on Friday that Florian Lejeune was now once again available and he was the closest to competing for a place in supporter eyes – but it was still 75% in favour of Lascelles starting, whilst Ciaran Clark had almost universal backing.

No surprise as well to see that the case with Mikel Merino, the 21 year old easily the best player in that defeat at Brighton.

As for midfield partner Isaac Hayden, he had roughly a 60/40 advantage over Jonjo Shelvey, whilst there was also support for playing all three of Merino, Hayden ad Shelvey.

On the wings, Ritchie was a no-brainer for supporters, whilst Christian Atsu polled well over 80%, as Jacob Murphy hasn’t shown as yet he is ready to compete for a place.

Up front is where it gets interesting.

Maybe fans are living in dreamland but it hasn’t prevented them from returning to a preferred option of two up front.

This was the case for most of last season, supporters wanting to play with two strikers despite knowing fine well there is all but zero chance of Rafa Benitez doing it.

Whilst Ayoze Perez had hardly any support, as did Mohamed Diame for that matter, neither of them a fancy to play a number 10 role if supporters had their way.

Instead the voting all centred on Gayle, Joselu and Mitrovic to fill the front two spots in a 4-4-2 formation.

There wasn’t much between the trio but the final choice came down to Mitro and Gayle, the pairing that many fans hoped to see last season.

I suppose the reality is that we don’t want to see at any time two strikers on the pitch together on Sunday, as with Rafa definitely not going to go for it from the start, he surely would only go for it as a desperate option during the game, if NUFC were chasing the game.
