Freddie Woodman progresses with selection for England against Latvia
Freddie Woodman was expected to go out on loan this summer but Sels and Krul exited St James Park and at the end of the window, the 20 year old is left competing with Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow.
On the international front, Freddie Woodman has followed up the Under 20s World Cup win in the summer, with promotion to being a permanent member of the England Under 21s.
On Friday he was on the bench as the Under 21s drew 1-1 with Holland but Tuesday night sees the young Newcastle keeper in the starting eleven.
Woodman starts against Latvia tonight as the England Under 21s play at Bournemouth in a European Championships qualifier.
It is the second start for Freddie Woodman at Under 21 level, having kept a clean sheet in October 2016 when England beat Kazakhstan 1-0.
With no regular football out on loan, it will be interesting to see what Rafa Benitez does with the ambitious keeper.
Playing for the Under 23s will only go so far and I expect to see Woodman getting at least some places on the bench in the Premier League, or maybe even taking turns with Karl Darlow as the number two behind Elliot.
