Chris Hughton says Jamaal Lascelles is working the margins for Newcastle

Chris Hughton has been comparing and contrasting Brighton and Newcastle, ahead of Sunday’s match.

The Seagulls boss believes that ‘As a side and way that Newcastle play, they’re reasonably similar to ourselves’.

At the moment though in the Premier League table, Newcastle are fourth top with nine points and Brighton fifth bottom with four points.

Chris Hughton believes that it comes down to very small margins and that the difference between the two clubs this season, could simply be down to the success of Jamaal Lascelles on set-pieces.

Hughton says ‘That can change them margins’, the Newcastle captain having transformed two likely draws into wins over Swansea and Stoke with goals in the final quarter of each match.

It will be interesting to see how the match pans out on Saturday.

Newcastle are yet to have the majority of possession in any Premier League game, whilst Brighton have only done that at Watford when the home side played for 66 minutes with 10 men, as well as in the 2-0 defeat to Leicester, another team who aren’t bothered about how much possession they have.

Both Newcastle and Brighton like to counter-attack, so interested to see who makes the running this time.

Newcastle won both games last season and edged the possession both times, so we might see a not so typical away performance from Rafa’s team.

Set-pieces decide so many games and it is such a relief after the amateurish years under Pardew in particular, that Newcastle at last have a professional approach that brought such success last season on free-kicks and corners, which appears to be continuing into this season.

One thing for sure, no Newcastle fan will be complaining if the team make it four in a row and Jamaal Lascelles makes it a personal three in a row, in this latest Premier League match.

Chris Hughton:

Newcastle are in good form at the moment with three wins and it just goes to show you the margins.

“They have a very good centre-half in Jamaal Lascelles who scored two goals from set-plays – that can change them margins.

“As a side and way that they play, they’re reasonably similar to ourselves, and perhaps that’s why they were close games last season.

“We were very close going right the way through the season.

“We are at home and we have to try and capitalise on our home form.

“But we know that we are up against a very good Newcastle side that are in good form.”
