Brighton fans had waited over 25 years to see their team win a league game against Newcastle United, so maybe no wonder they got a little excited.
Last season saw Newcastle deservedly win both matches, even though it took them until the final 10 minutes for their superiority to turn into goals in the away match.
The dramatic finale that saw Newcastle win their last three matches and Chris Hughton’s team pick up only a point, leading to Rafa Benitez winning the second tier title, obviously also struck a nerve.
Some Brighton fans thought it was a close game but others were a little more triumphant with their comments.
Brighton fans comment via their top North Stand Chat message board:
‘Watching the Spanish git whinge and whine about everything except his team was glorious.
I don’t remember him being quite so courteous about a freak winning goal at the Amex last season, I hope this grates.
Long trip home for those Geordies, gives them plenty of time to play the game over and over and over again.’
‘It’s gonna be neck and neck all season. Not much to choose between the two teams.
I thought the Newcastle fans were a bit subdued.’
‘Atsu’s crossing was just awful – think his first 6 crosses hit the first man.’
‘Great game of football. Think we did enough to just shade it, but a draw wouldn’t have been unreasonable either.
Very happy to take 3 points off anyone, but it is slightly sweeter taking them off a mini-league rival. Fantastic afternoon.’
‘I’m glad Shelvey didn’t start, he looked their most dangerous player when he came on. Very talented passer of the ball. like a slaphead Jan Molby.’
Geordies whinging on Twitter.
Managed to stay stone cold sober.
Lovely walk home.
Pretty decent Sunday, all things considered.’
‘Benitez seems to be ignoring the same sort of tactics that they were doing at some corners to leave Lascelles with a chance of a header….they just weren’t good enough unlike us.’
‘A draw would have probably been a fair result……. who cares that it wasn’t after the daylight robbery of Newcastle’s last visit here.’
‘Got to the pub in time for the last 30 minutes or so. Longest 30 minutes of my life! Watching defence against attack can be very wearing.’
‘Losing Hemed would be a big blow. It’d be naive to ignore it.’
‘I am not normally one to moan about this but the number of people that left the east stand (and probably other stands) with 5 minutes to go is ridiculous.
If you are not going to stay to the end for a game like that then you are honestly not a Brighton fan. Mental.’
‘Thoroughly deserved win with strong performances throughout the team.
The benefits of attacking football and going for the win.
Fortune favours the brave.’
‘Good win hard work but deserved just and overall good performance against an in form Newcastle.’
‘Well done Brighton! Hughton was right and I was wrong.’
‘Best thing was that we held on…I confess to being sure we would concede at the death.
We defended a 1 – 0! …. That is the mark of a competant and ultimately successful team.’
‘Fans leaving early en mass when hanging on to a vital 1-0 lead
No other clubs seem to do this like we do. Now we’re under the Premier League spotlight it’s particularly embarrassing. Our transport really isn’t bad enough to justify it…
How can we encourage fans to stick around until the final whistle?
This is not a moan – a great day & result – but if we can’t keep our fans in their seats until the end on a game like this, something is rather wrong and we could be doing better.’
‘Its funny though, we sit in the ESL family stand and I felt that it was probably the smallest exodus we have had in ages. In our area no one had left early at all. Everyone was stood as well for the last minute or so and the number of people applauding the players off at the end was way more than usual. Excellent atmosphere.’
