When it came to Newcastle goalkeepers, there was no shortage of options for Rafa Benitez this summer.

His first decision was to send Matz Sels out on a year’s loan to Anderlecht, back in the keeper’s native Belgium.

Then very late in the transfer window, Tim Krul was allowed to leave and join Brighton on a season’s loan as well, though that seemed a little strange as the Dutch keeper’s NUFC contract only had a year to run anyway.

Wednesday afternoon saw the surprise announcement that Krul’s loan move had now turned into a permanent deal, meaning that he could now play against Newcastle on Sunday, if selected.

A lot of debate in the summer about the Newcastle goalkeepers and who should be first choice, back-up etc, with Rafa Benitez openly looking to bring in a new experienced number one.

Like a lot of his transfer targets, this failed to happen for the United boss, and now the situation is that Rob Elliot is number one, with Freddie Woodman apparently now the main back-up, as he has been on the bench for the last three Newcastle matches – which happily have all ended in victories.

Karl Darlow seemingly now ending up as third choice.

So rewinding back to the summer, which three Newcastle goalkeepers would you have wanted on duty this season?

  • Paul Patterson

We have a plethora of good goalkeepers, one had to go, Krul was the obvious choice. I just don’t agree with him bring allowed to play on Sunday. Asking for trouble..

    • Salty

Don’t think he’s been in a PL squad this season yet so not likely to become first choice mate

  • Kev-82

The 3 we kept but I’ve yet to know what Darlow done wrong I’d have kept him as 1st choice.

    • steve

Quite simple, he made a few big mistakes in quick succession. Elliott has given Rafa no reason to drop him since he came back in.

  • mentalman

    Isnt darlow injured?

    I’d have let woodman leave

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Rob has a problem, he can`t kick a ball, he starts some of the oppositions attacks

    • Geordiegiants

Given was exactly the same in the early days.

  • hetonmag

Wasn’t too fussed with Elliott but he played a blinder on Saturday, agree with MMM he needs to work on his kicking tho.

  • Alreet

Kinda pointless now but id keep what we have. Krul was appalling at AZ. And selz was just poor for us in a lower league. Darlow needs to improve his judgement but hes almost as young as woodman who is also very good.

    • Clarko

Darlow is 26 (Oct 8, 1990) and Woodman is 20 (Mar 4, 1997). There is a significant difference in age between the two.

Any combination that keeps Elliott and Woodman is ok for now. But Woodman really needs to start being groomed to take over sooner rather than later.

  • Carlo Ancelotti

Woodman`s a problem, i think he`s ready to play at the top level so i`d like to see him play a few games or at least be on the bench
