Tino Asprilla is the gift that keeps on giving.

The Newcastle United cult hero has been talking about his old club ahead of Sunday’s Premier League kick-off against Tottenham.

Tino Asprilla says that Newcastle is ‘a team that is in my heart’ and hopes they can now stay in the top tier for ‘a long time’.

A maverick on and off the pitch, Tino admits to inviting girls around his house when at Newcastle and convincing them to visit by saying that David Ginola would be there…

As for the pain of not winning the title in 1995/96, the Columbian says that the pain will be there ‘all my life, it will never go away’.

Tino Asprilla talking to ESPN:

Thoughts on Newcastle returning to the Premier League this weekend?

“Happy because it’s a team that is in my heart.

“They have a stadium that is really special and I hope they can stay in the Premier League for a long time.”

Is it true you used to tell girls that David Ginola was in your house so they would come round?

“Many times I had to trick them.

“They asked, ‘Who is in your house?’ I’d say ‘Ginola’ and they’d all come because they wanted to see him.

“Then they’d get here and be ‘where is Ginola?’ I said, ‘He’ll be back in five minutes!’

“Ginola was very chilled out. So was Shearer.”

When you look back at how close you got to winning the title under Kevin Keegan, does it still hurt that you didn’t manage to get over the line?

“It will be there all my life. It’ll never go away.

“We were so close to winning the league and to lose is something I’ll never be able to get over.”
