Spurs fans with interesting comments after Newcastle 0 Tottenham 2

Opening game of the season and surprisingly Spurs fans failed to fill the away end, leaving hundreds of empty seats.

Despite that, they had plenty to say after beating Newcastle 2-0 with the assistance of Jonjo Shelvey.

Interesting to see what they say after beating the 10 men of Newcastle, having struggled to break down a promoted NUFC side that looked well up for the opening game.

Some were realistic whilst others were keen to say that a win was always a formality.

Comments as well on the home fans and revenge for that 5-1 defeat 15 months ago, as well as whether Harry Kane should also have been sent off.

Comments from Spurs fans via their top Fighting Cock message board:

‘Lovely last pre-season friendly completed. Can’t wait until we play a proper PL side next week.’

‘Properly exorcised some ghosts yesterday……went back to all the same bars and drank exactly the same drinks as after the 5-1 game.’

‘That (Kane on Lejeune) is not a red card, there can be arguments that it should be due to the risk of injury ( I dont want it to be as I like hard tackles), but for all that, say its a red I can point to you loads of instances where it has been play on or free kick at worse.’

‘Functional more than beautiful yesterday is how I saw it*. But that’s ok opening game of the season. 3 Points,2 goals and a clean sheet.

*I did have about 8 pints though,so my judgment maybe somewhat blurred.’

‘The hatred of Dele was second only to Sissoko among the Newcastle fans, even without the red card stuff. He seems to generally be disliked by everyone. I wonder what other teams’ fans think of him when he plays for England.’

‘On Kane – yes the player was injured, but the colour of the card shouldn’t be based on player injury. It was a hard yellow (orange?) but would have been a really soft red.

Let’s not act like it was the same as what Jonjo did.’

‘Good day out except the person standing behind me being sick on my bag and top!!

FFS you can have plenty of beers before the game, have fun and still be nowhere near that sort of state. Worth it though for the three points!’

‘Rafa Benitez thinks Kane should have been sent off!!! What?!?’

‘I am not actually sure. It was a terrible tackle which injured their player.

We would screaming if it was on one of ours. I would not have been surprised if he showed a red. It could be construed as serious foul play. Scissor tackles are red cards usually. The actual rule is:

‘Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play’

‘Sissoko works well in open space but cannot beat anyone on the dribble.

Dele was being his abrasive self, and poked the bald headed bear who took the bait. Well done!’

‘The more i see Harry’s tackle the more i think he could have been sent off.

Very clumsy and ugly.

Think we were fortunate.’

‘Every game I’ve been to at St. James’s I’ve been surprised how quiet the home support is. Same again.

Okay game. Pleased we got the result but we weren’t flowing well in the first half at all. A better team would have caused us serious problems.’

‘I live up here and went to see them when they were in the Championship.

Thought at the time the crowd was poor because most of them had stopped going due to relegation and it was all non-supporters like me. Apparently not.’

‘I thought we were deliberately controlled in the 1st half and in the end full value for an important win.

Didn’t think anyone had a bad game, even Sissoko did ok but his lacking of passing ability does stand out still.and id expect him to be off soon.

A good solid win with lots to look forward to.’

‘If Newcastle play like that week in week out, they are in for a really long season. Very negative football.

We on the other hand were patient and always looked to take the three points, even without Shelvey’s stupid red card. What was he thinking? Same old Shelvey.’

‘To be fair, they nearly got the 0-0 they wanted if their players had kept their heads. Shelvey was playing with passion and reacting to some gamesmanship by Alli. The reaction was over the top but he was clearly provoked by Alli pushing the ball away when they had possession.

Honestly, I thought they were in the game and gifted us 3 points as we might’ve had to work hard for them not being at full speed yet.’

‘Really good 2nd half performance.

As for Shelvey, what a coward, typical of players who don’t have the ability of their opponents so just lash out.

For their first game back the Geordie support was woeful, they seemed to save their loudest for booing sisokko and jeering Dele, desperate, love to see them go back down, despite the media reach around, their home support was rubbish.’

‘Nice , easy win to start the season off with.’

‘Souey and Pards keep going on about Shelvey’s sending off but they’d have tired anyway. We started rustily but had begun to pick it up by the 35 min mark.

We ran possession more or less throughout, that would have had its effect as the game wore on, just might have taken it out of us a bit more.’

‘Pardew’s got some front calling Shelvey petulant after head butting a player on the touchline.’

‘Did anyone else notice that the grass was cut a bit long and the ball didn’t move to fast over it.

It seems to hold up and not zip.

I wonder if that was purposeful or just a rubbish pitch.’

Ashley probably hadn’t paid the gardener as he’s hard up.’

‘Those newcastle fans want to thank Dele for not rolling about like most others.

He actually didn’t make much of a fuss.

Shelvey just couldn’t be patient and wait for the ball.’

‘Thought it was very solid compared to last year. Keep in mind Newcastle was set up really well by Rafa. We never looked uncomfortable and I was always confident we’d win it.’

‘Good performance & win against our bogey team. Its all about the 3pts at this stage of the season. Solid throughout. Struggled to break them down before the sending off.’
