Shay Given “Rafa is saying they’re not good enough to stay in the division…”

Shay Given has called for unity/common sense at his former club.

A Newcastle United legend and certainly the greatest living goalkeeper any fan has seen in the black and  white stripes, Given says ‘Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley need to get their heads together and move the club forward’.

John Carver this week revealed that when he was in charge, Mike Ashley rang him before every match, then came to see him after the final whistle if he was at any game.

In contrast, Rafa met Ashley back in May when the season ended but hasn’t spoke to him since.

The club’s owner was at the Spurs match but left St James Park as Rafa was carrying out his media duties, declining the chance to speak to the club’s manager.

Shay Given says it is far from ideal for the owner and manager never communicating directly, instead sending messages through Lee Charnley.

With Rafa Benitez thwarted by Ashley in terms of getting in the signings he had lined up at the beginning of the transfer window, his job has been made so much harder.

With the manager still chasing key essential signings he feels he needs, Given says that this undermines the squad who are currently relied upon to try and win matches.

Shay Given’s take on it is that ‘Rafa is saying they’re not good enough to stay in the division…’, which is maybe a bit harsh.

For me, Rafa is saying that to have a realistic chance of avoiding a relegation struggle, he still need two or three decent signings.

Shay Given speaking to The Mirror podcast:

Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley need to get their heads together and move the club forward.

“By my accounts, people are telling me that they don’t even speak any more.

Lee Charnley is now the go-between between Ashley and Rafa.

“That is not an ideal situation.

“You don’t want to hear those things as a player.

“The squad can feel undermined if the club are always linked with other players.

“Rafa is saying they’re not good enough to stay in the division, so it seems as if all is not going accordingly up there….”
