Sell Dwight Gayle? Get him in the team alongside Joselu

As well as Sky Sports trying to stir it with a ‘Rafa for West Ham’ storyline, The Mail have been doing the same with ‘Rafa to sell Dwight Gayle’.

Obviously great to see both Joselu and Mitrovic score in Saturday’s 3-0 win but it doesn’t take away the fact that Gayle is still the only natural goalscorer NUFC have got at the moment.

The Mail exclusive claimed that Rafa Benitez was looking to sell Dwight Gayle in order to help fund signings he wants to make.

I don’t see how this makes sense for all kinds of reasons.

Yes Dwight Gayle looked little threat in his two appearances so far, but he got next to no support or sight of the ball and didn’t look completely fit, having played only 30 minutes of the final three pre-season friendlies.

It was always going to be far harder stepping up to the Premier League but his 23 goals despite only 26 Championship starts last season, told us that if you get the ball to Dwight Gayle in decent positions he can finish, whatever the opposition.

I am convinced that if fully fit and getting the right support, the number nine will deliver.

Selling your best goalscorer and expecting to pick up a better replacement at this late stage (four days of transfer window left) is surely daydreaming.

One target put forward is Stevan Jovetic who is unwanted at Inter. He may be a decent player  but in the last four seasons the best he has managed is six league goals in a season, so if you could sell Gayle and buy him, you might be bringing in other qualities but certainly not more goals.

With the injury worries ongoing with Gayle anyway, I’m not sure where you would find a club to spend big on the striker anyway. He would have a price but it would be far below what his real worth is, if he could show he can stay fit.

I think by far the best bet is to try and get Dwight Gayle match fit and back for the Swansea game after the international break, then I can’t see any reason why you couldn’t play him and Joselu together. Though with one of them, maybe taking turns, at dropping back into midfield to help the team when defending.

Both of them are far more mobile than Ayoze Perez who currently plays the number 10 role very poorly both would be an upgrade and could score more goals.

Newcastle aren’t in a position to trade-in/sell-off goals and need every help they can get, rather than selling off Dwight Gayle to one of their competitors.
