Newcastle United have signed Kenedy according to reports on Wednesday night.

The club’s official media partner, The Mirror, claim that NUFC have signed the Brazilian on a year long loan.

The 21 year old is usually a left winger but can also play wing-back and left-back, a position that looks weak for Newcastle.

Bought for around £8m two years ago, Kenedy moved from Fluminese (Brazil) to Stamford Bridge.

With 549 minutes and one goal for Chelsea in the Premier League in 2015/16, then only another 75 league minutes for the Blues and 15 minutes on loan at Watford last season, fair to say his career wasn’t on an upward curve.

This summer saw the winger sent home in disgrace by Chelsea after upsetting their Chinese hosts.

On a pre-season tour, Kenedy insulted locals by posting on social media: ‘Damn China’ and ‘Wake up China, you idiot’.

The Mirror reporting/claiming:

Rafa Benitez has snapped up Chelsea outcast Kenedy on a season’s loan.

Newcastle’s boss offered the Brazilian an escape route to the north-east after learning he was up for grabs.

Benitez has moved quickly to secure the deal using well-established contacts made during his spell in charge of the club four years ago.

And the winger will offer the Tyneside giants added impetus going forward as the Spaniard continues his re-building of the Magpies.’

  • Thefootballerwhocouldfly

Relieved Rafa is staying….signings made may not be the ones he wants but hey with Ashley & Penfold in charge what do you expect?!

    • Andy Mac

Exactly this ! Careful, prudent purchases made without a clue about what we really need to survive.

  • John

The winter window is a waste of time none of the right type players are available we need to get the right ones now Kenedy I would have my doubts would have liked Gibbs were in trouble when Watford and Bournemouth are spending 20 million on players and were shopping for loan deals.

  • Jimblag23

Seems like the order of the summer, young and hardly any experience.
Relieved to be strengthening the squad if he’s any good though.
Having said that, didn’t Sunderland sign loads of players, all of whom were not up to the required standard.

    • Toonrobbybobson

      Hahahaha

    • Andy Mac

Didnt make the grade at Watford JB. Sent home from China pre season for
being a dlck. Penfold and his boss must be creaming themselves they were
still in the office to answer the phone ?

      • Anita kick up the Hoop

He was a victim of PC hysteria .. and Chelsea’s fear of hurting their brand .. what he actually said was nothing “offensive” although everything in 2017 I saw offensive

  • Andy Mac

Yeah this is great news, We’ve been seeking a left side midfielder all summer long and having fought off competition from the likes of Scunthorpe, Accrington Stanley and a pub team in Lincoln we’re really proud that Kenedy (only one N despite the fact he was named after Robert Kennedy) has chosen our top flight club to waste his next season.

Congrats to Penfold and his oppo for dragging this over the line !

  • Toonrobbybobson

Hes got talent no doubt. Chelsea sign good players. Rafa obviously knows a bit about the lad so I trust his judgement. If we can bulk the squad up first season back with good young hungry players on loan it will do for me if it means Rafa DOES get the necessary funds for what he wants. This window is crazy! The likes of Gray for £18m says it all. Kennedy will be hungry having seen how its played out for Atsu. The opportunity is there.

    • Andy Mac

How the fk do you know that TRB ? How many times have you seen him play ?What, in his career so far, suggests he has anything to offer a top flight club ? Even Watford sent him back ?

      • Clarko

He sustained a knee injury during his loan spell at Watford resulting in him not featuring and eventually returning to Chelsea.

        • Andy Mac

Still a relevant question despite his short stay at Watford, yes WATFORD !

          • Clarko

Why is it an issue that his loan at Watford ended due to injury?

          • glassjawsh-got-banned

Atsu didn’t feature very often at Everton and was sent back by Bournemouth (and he seems to be doing okay for us) so your point doesn’t really make a lot of sense.

  • Anita kick up the Hoop

Hopefully has a permanent clause in the contract somewhere… has to be brought in as left back option surely ?

    • Clarko

He is a winger/forward who has featured occasionally at left back while at Chelsea.

      • Anita kick up the Hoop

That’s good because we are short of left wingers

        • Clarko

          Yes we are.

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

He’s coming in as a left back/wing back .. we have Aarons, Atsu, Murphy and Ritchie who can all play left wing .. you really think we are short in that position?

          • Clarko

He is a left winger, he was used sparingly at left back for Chelsea, Newcastle have Dummett, Manquillo, Gamez, Haidara and Lazaar as more natural left backs. I stated the following 19 days ago describing why we need another left winger:

“Murphy hasn’t made a Premier League appearance as of yet, and of the games recorded (transfermarkt) he has appeared 51 games playing on the left side compared to the 79 games he has appeared on the right.

Aarons is too injury prone to be relied upon, he is also very inexperienced having only 503 minutes of Premier League football under his belt.

Atsu has played as much on the right wing, appearing 38 times, as he has on the left wing, appearing 41 times (of the games recorded by transfermarkt).”

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

Hahaha you are seriously counting Haidara, Lazaar And Gamez as viable left backs for the coming season ?? Two aren’t even being given squad numbers and the other has been seen less than Lord Lucan .. I know Kennedy has played mostly as a winger BUT talking to a scout who worked for Chelsea they seem to think as he’s matured and gotten stronger his best position could be left back/wing back .. we shall see I suppose.. we all know Dummet isn’t up to it though surely

          • Clarko

Am I seriously counting Haidara, Lazaar and Gamez as more natural left backs than Kenedy? Yes.

Kenedy has been brought in with the intention to play him as a winger/attacker.

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

They haven’t even been given squad numbers for gods sake .. tell me, seeing as though Kennedy has been used several times by Chelsea at left back in the Premiership.. how many games in the same position do you think Lazaar or Haidara would get for Chelsea?

          • Clarko

Nobody has been given squad numbers as of yet nor did I say that they have been given squad numbers or the that they will be given squad numbers, what I said was that Lazaar, Haidara and Gamez are more natural left backs than Kenedy, stop with the straw man.

You have also resorted to asking irrelevant hypothetical questions.

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

What a coward .. you know Lazaar and Haidara aren’t being given squad numbers, you know that neither of them would get any game time for Chelsea at Premiership or any professional level .. the point being that as Kennedy HAS appeared for Chelsea 22 times, 15 at premier league level and a number of them playing as a left back he would appear better at that position than either Lazaar or Haidara .. that’s not it hypocritical.. it’s factual and relevant.

          • Clarko

I am not arguing about squad numbers or whether Newcastle players could/would play for Chelsea, it’s irrelevant. I am arguing about Kenedy.

In his 22 appearances for Chelsea he only featured 8 times at left back (transfermarkt). As described earlier Newcastle are weak in the left midfield area. After the arrival of Murphy Newcastle have been still been strongly linked with Townsend, Ojo and Traore which corroborates the idea that Newcastle need for another wide midfielder. Newcastle, while completely disregarding Haidara and Lazaar, have Dummett, Gamez, Manquillo and Clark in the left back position. Before his move to Chelsea he was a winger, at Chelsea the majority of his appearances were made as a left winger. Those are relevant facts.

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

It’s highly relevant .. if we have a lad who’s been good enough to make Chelsea’s first team eight times as a left back AND at only 21 (20 really because he was injured and on Loan last season) then he’s obviously better than the likes of Lazaar And Haidara who I’m sure even you would admit wouldn’t get anywhere near their side … it’s only irrelevant because it doesn’t suit your argument.
You started this debate by stating Kennedy was only coming here as a winger .. clearly if he’s played 8 times for Chelsea as a left back he’s got every chance of turning out for newly promoted Newcastle in that same position.

          • Clarko

It’s not relevant, you’re talking about Haidara and Lazaar playing for Chelsea. I am arguing why Kenedy has been brought in with the intention of him playing at left midfield/wing.

You’re ignorant, you’re ignoring Dummett, Gamez, Manquillo and Clark. You’re also a liar, I have never stated that Kenedy “was only coming here as a winger”, below you find a quote declaring what I believe and what I stated in a previous comment.

“Kenedy has been brought in with the intention to play him as a winger/attacker.”

Not once did I say he “was only coming here as a winger”, Kenedy is a versatile player and under specific circumstances he may find himself playing left back at Newcastle, but I do not believe that is the “intention” of Benitez.

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

Too right I’m ignoring the others you mention.. and for good reason .. none could play 8 games at left back for Chelsea!!
I’m going on the word of someone who’s worked as a scout for Chelsea and after speaking to people at the club has told me Kennedy looks like maturing into a left back rather than a winger .. you know, like Ivanovic, Alaba and Evra who all started as wingers!
Would you have told Spurs or Real Madrid they were getting a left back when they signed Gareth Bale?

          • Clarko

You’re talking about hearsay, second-hand information, “he said that he said this”, it cannot be proven, it’s not credible. That is all you have, hearsay and hypotheticals. The facts don’t cease to exist because they are ignored.

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

Hahaha .. you are really floundering now mate, I’m talking about people who’ve worked with the lad day in day out .. you are (as usual) going off some internet page full of stats.. all the players I mentioned were converted wingers or visa Versa .. why can’t Raffa see Kennedy as the next Alaba or Gibbs?
“It’s not credible” so we match as well disregard all coaching

          • Clarko

Facts and statistics vs gossip and hypotheticals.

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

            Embarrassing

          • Clarko

Look at that, it turns out I was right and you were wrong, shocker.

  • Paul Patterson

Seriously, the negative comments on here are scandalous and defy the definition of support.

    • Andy Mac

So you think that picking up a player from Chelski who was training on his own is good news for this club when we really needed a striker, No 10 and a LB ?

That in my opinion is what defies belief ?

      • Oval85

He is a forward, can be used on both sides and in the middle, and has also been used as a LB in Chelsea.
He actually ticks all your requirements in fact.
He’s a talented lad no doubt about it, and I think its a brilliant signing.

        • Jimblag23

And also only training on his own for non-footballing reasons.

          • Andy Mac

But that’s the most worrying factor ? Hot headed, numpty who thinks he’s bigger than his boots ? Where is Nile Ranger nowadays ?

      • Jezza

Spot on Andy. It just reeks of them going for anybody they could get in on the cheap. Doesn’t matter who he is or what position he plays, if he’s available on loan we’ll have him.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

Same old, same old. if he`s cheep get him to make up the numbers

        • Mal

He might turn out to be good but hopefully not. We must keep up the negativity.

      • Paul Patterson

And people raved about Ben Arfa. Similar situations..

      • Mal

He could still be an asset to the squad even if he doesn’t fit in with your criteria for priorities. As usual the negatives seem to be because he isn’t a proven PL striker/creative midfielder/number 10/ left back who cost £20million. Yes we would all like them but it doesn’t mean that this kid is useless.

  • Stephen Paylor

I trust Rafa knows more than me about him so fingers crossed. Hopefully a future fee if we choose? All i know about him is from clips. He is quick and direct with good feet.

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

I look forward to at least 11 months of people around here spelling this poor kid’s name wrong…

    • Jimblag23

He’ll tweet “Wake up Geordies, there are two N’s”

  • chandra gedanggoreng

I hope Benitez will put him as our first choice left fullback. Strong, quick, young and offensive. Although he needs to learn the defensive skills of this position and hone his crossing. Overall, truly an upgrade compared with Dummet. Is there any info regarding the permanent clause inserted on his loan agreement?

    • chandra gedanggoreng

Any news regarding permanent clause inserted, lads?

  • nevfur

    I thought Alan had retired.

  • Whitehurst

Class, yet another winger….just what we need!! 🤔 Still any young Brazilian, signed by Chelski has to be worth a punt….despite his racist overtones!! 😬 YouTube clips look tasty. However I’ve learnt YouTube can be a cruel mistress….Albert Luque a case in point!! 😳

    • Leazes Ender

      From Wiki

During a pre-season tour of China, Kenedy caused controversy by posting two videos on social media which were described as “distasteful” towards the country. During a subsequent match on the tour against Arsenal he was heckled by angry fans.[19] As a result, Kenedy was sent back to England for damaging relationships with the Asian fan base.[20] Both Kenedy and Chelsea later issued apologies over the incident and the club stated that the player had been “strongly reprimanded and disciplined”. Following the incident, Chinese media outlets were ordered to withdraw stories related to Chelsea from homepages and apps and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that there was a remote possibility of a ban for the club.[21]

He won’t be welcome in Chinatown

      • Haitchdee

He maybe thinks he’s worth the Re hab effort.

    • HarryHype59

He played one game for Watford last season on loan. Underwhelmed springs to mind.

  • HenrySlade

As signings go, it’s a tad underwhelming, but I suppose that we should be thankful for small mercies.

  • Leazes Ender

    Who?

I see ‘Wor’ Clarko has been using a database…. :)

  • TheFatController

Why do people assume that, every time we are linked with / sign a player that is not a striker it means we’re not getting one?

Can’t you handle stress? Most jobs these days pay on ability to deal with stress more than any particular skill, it’s a stressful world. Toughen up and accept the fact that the market is going to be stressful, then you might stop panicking every moment we don’t sign the striker we need …

Also, why are people complaining that we are signing young hungry players in positions already with young players in them (in this instance winger)? I hope they’re not the same people who have complained for years that there was no competition meaning the ‘stars’ were guaranteed a place.

It’s obvious Rafa works on a ‘keep them on their toes’ 25 man squad policy.

If this guy signed, never played but made, say, Aarons play his heart out, job done…

    • Damon Horner

      You know the rules….

      Can’t be too young.
      Can’t be too old.
      Can’t be 22 – 27 where a sell on value may apply.
      Cannot be French.
      Cannot be Belgian.
      Cannot be too inexperienced.
      Cannot be too old.
Has to have a solid Premier League record.

      • Steve

….and has to have been bought for at least £30million….

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Why have we signed him ??

    • Leazes Ender

Because he’s free and there’s three days to go.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

I thought so, it can`t be for his playing record as he hasn`t got 1

    • Whitehurst

Probably because he’s Brazilian….no other reason!!

  • Steve Smith

He’s aware that our sponsors are Chinese right?

I suppose it’s been a while since Ranger left so the resident scumbag position does need filling…

    • MadMag83

      Ashley has that position covered.

  • hetonmag

In life everyone should be given a chance, ok he stepped over the line but he’s only young so there is still time to get his career back on track best of luck to him.

    • Steve Smith

      He’s 21 years old. He’s a fully grown man.

Typical racist chelski at worst, a total idiot at best. We don’t need to be associated with either.

      • hetonmag

So you would hold that against him for the rest of his life ??

        • Steve Smith

Rest of his life? His indiscretion happened a week ago….

      • ToonNL

Tell that to the 21 year olds in town…

  • Steve Pearce

So that’s why Jack Colback has been left out of the 25 man squad. I think Kenedy should watch what he says about the Chinese as SJP is virtually in Chinatown and he risks getting chopped to bits by the Wu Shung Wo triad…..

  • HarryHype59

He was at Watford on loan last season and played…wait for it……ONE …….first team game for them. I would sooner have given Ginger Jack a squad place.

    • Mal

Does Kennedy take up a squad place?

  • Mal

I’m old enough to remember when we used to welcome new signings and wait to see them play before we commented on them. Now we just write them off immediately with a string of negative comments. We’ve signed a young lad on loan who might turn out to be brilliant. Why all the negativity, and as far as I’m aware he doesn’t actually take up a squad place. But let’s not let facts get in the way of trashing him. Hopefully he doesn’t think by coming on to a supporters’ website he might see some positive comments.
I’ve read about his tweets and hopefully he’s even the error of his ways and they won’t be repeated. We should give him a chance to redeem himself.

    • Leazes Ender

Have a look a his performance data 16/17

      • Mal

I have. I looked at it, and previous seasons, as soon as we were linked with him. Last season wasn’t good but he was injured for quite a period. Nevertheless he was taken as part of a 25 man squad to China which suggests to me Conte seen something in him and wanted to have a good look. That didn’t work out as he made a bit of an a**e of himself. I accept he might be a complete waste of time but on the other hand he does appear to have talent (he has represented Brazil at various levels) so he might just knuckle down to make a point. Who knows? But it seems to me by taking him on loan, and the fact he doesn’t take up one of the 25 places in the squad, it’s a pretty low risk signing and he might add some quality to a squad which, let’s face it, needs strengthening overall.
Whilst I understand the cynicism towards the current regime I can’t understand your negativity towards every signing we make when my guess is you haven’t seen them play in some cases.
Anyway I shouldn’t worry as, if he reads the stuff on this website, he probably won’t sign anyway.

  • Dave

We still have not signed him every other club signs them in a day it takes us 5 weeks just in time for someone else to come in bye bye Rafa

  • Stu Dee

wow and i thought newcastle werent going to make a big signing. Guess i was wrong. 1 goal in 560 minutes. He can compete with mitro for most goals this season.
