Newcastle United are in talks with Southampton to try and land Matt Targett.

The Southampton left-back is set for a move to St James Park according to an exclusive carried by Teamtalk.

The 21 year signed a new five contract earlier in August but currently finds himself third choice at St Mary’s.

Ryan Bertrand and Sam McQueen are ahead of Matt Targett, who hasn’t even made the Premier League bench this season.

However, just because he is third choice at one of our ‘rivals’, don’t despair as he looks a decent player (a regular for England Under 21s).

Like so many others, Matt Targett made his Premier League debut for Southampton at a young age, just after turning 19 in the 2014/15 season.

He then made a decent 13 starts the next year (2015/16) but missed most of last (2016/17) season with hamstring problems, starting only five Premier League matches.

A number of other Premier League clubs are also said to be trying to land the left-back but just maybe this is one where Newcastle will be forced to push themselves to land the player.

Chancel Mbemba  has had to play as an emergency left-back and yesterday the Chronicle reported that Paul Dummett is now set to be missing until November, so a left-back surely has to arrive today…

  • Peaky Magpie

Yes,Southampton 3rd choice left back is exactly where we stand today, what happened to the bloke from Argentina ?

    • anyobrien

Deal has turned complex apparently…. Meaning we won’t pay what they want.

  • Dave Mitchison

Oh goodie a marquee signing, I’m underwhelmed

    • Peaky Magpie

The closest we will get to a marquee is Lardys new white shirt when he’s next at SJP,you could get a full wedding under the size of one of those.

    • Leazes Ender

We do have a ‘trophy manager’ though but like.

  • anyobrien

Tbh this kid is actually a decent player… Have a Newcastle fan mate down there who watches football in generalt to get his fix and has seen him play says he is decent and will put pressure on dummett

  • Paul Patterson

I’d be moderately excited if we were buying outright..

  • Jimblag23

We’ve got to the point where journalists are just googling Newcastle transfer target.

  • Steve Smith

Got me a bunch of points in fantasy football the year before last!

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      How Wonderful

  • phil

Would be a good signing I think. Why are people disappointed about being linked with him yet excited about somebody from Argentina who I’m guessing nobody has ever watched play or even heard of?

    • Leazes Ender

So you are excited by this injury prone reserve, why do you say that do you think he’ll be a good signing? It a bit like buying a ‘Pukka Pie’ …. you’re not terribly sure just what type of meat is inside.

      • phil

On the occasions iv watched him he has looked promising and would be an improvement on dummet.
I suppose buying your pukka pie from Argentina would be safer…. Not

        • Leazes Ender

Dirt average players are uninspiring, difficult to ship out…….I see we’ve dropped a place in the Squad Value table to Sixteenth now.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

            😂😂

  • Biggs Darklighter

In 10 years the fat man has spent absolutely nothing. And nothing will change today.

  • Jezza

He’ll just be another Targett we miss out on in this miserbale transfer window. (Sorry couldn’t resist that one).

    • Jimblag23

It’s already now being reported as unlikely 😂
Apparently loan fee is too high.
So standard of this window, hear about a target, half an hour later hear the transfer is dead in the water.

      • Jezza

£40 million transfer profit last summer and we can’t even afford a LOAN FEE for a Southampton resverve. Fatso has really excelled himself this time.

  • Peaky Magpie

Biggest shock about this is a Southampton player not going to Liverpool.

  • Leazes Ender

One of those Charnley days…. feet up, cup of tea, Rafa resigns.

    • Jimblag23

      At 10.30pm,
“…think…think…? What was it Rafa asked me to do today??”

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

The clubs an embarrassment to Newcastle

  • Peaky Magpie

As I live in The Peak District I’m off into the hills until the transfer window closes.Told the missus I’ll be back when we sign De Gea,Hazard & Aguero.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      a Mountain Rescue job

    • Dave Mitchison

You’re dogs are going to have a long walk

      • Leazes Ender

        ‘Your’

        • Dave Mitchison

          Sorry “predictive text”

    • Leazes Ender

I thought you might be under the weather.

  • Dave Mitchison

Do you think that Charnley heard that Rafa was desperate for a target man and just made a b8lls up yet again.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

surely Rafa can’t be sanctioning this lot
    😠
