Newcastle 3 West Ham 0 – Instant United fan/writer reaction to Premier League win

Newcastle 3 West Ham 0  – Saturday 23 August 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Ben Cooper:

“Big performance, big win, big three points against a woeful West Ham side who were well and truly hammered.

“If the first goal was important, the second one was vital and when they gave up we ran amck.

“Well played everyone, apart from a 10 minute spell in the second half when they changed formation, pushed up and Elliott almost gifted them a goal twice in 5 seconds.

“I was suprised at how easily we domainated midfield, especially after going ahead, and that should give the likes of Merino, Hayden and Atsu the confidence to know that they are PL standard, even if it is the bottom half of the PL.

“Mitro mugging Joe Hart off was the icing on the cake.

“Head and Shoulders above them today.”

Davey Hat-Trick:

“What a pleasure it was to leave a match, in the sunshine, with Toon fans singing Mitrovic’ name to the rafters.

“Then encountering West Ham fans arguing about who out of Hernandez, Noble or Antonio (all players I’d have gladly taken 2 hours earlier) had let them down the most.

“I went to the game expecting a struggle, but instead saw a Newcastle side playing with purpose, positivity and desire.

“I’m not going to criticise anyone, but I will single out Merino, Hayden, Clark and Joselu for particular praise. And a nod to Mbemba, who did well in a position he clearly finds uncomfortable.

“What this means in terms of the season I have no idea.

“Do I care? Not right now. It’s a bank holiday, the sun is shining and the Toon just won 3-0. Vamos!”

David Punton:

“We’ve played really well today. Lovely. We were as good as West Ham were bad.

“The narrative all week has been one of negativity, so what better way to respond than with a good performance.

“Merino and Ritchie excellent and Joselu (that Stoke reserve) led the line very well indeed.

“Great effort from the players.”

Paul Patterson:

“Where did that come from?

“Top effort lads.

“Let’s kick on, on and off the field!!!”

Toon Bano:

“Excellent result. Excellent performance. Excellent day all round.

Joselu & Mitro on the scoresheet is exactly what we needed.

“Merino with a class performance in midfield also important for his confidence. Defence, again, rock solid.

“Suddenly we don’t look like in crisis anymore. Amazing what a quality result & performance can do.

“If we sign a couple of players over the next week we can look forward to the rest of the season and shut these pundits up!!”

Paul Lyon:

“A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon at a sunny St James Park – love days like these!

“Our first half of endeavour and deserved goal set us up nicely for the second half.

“As the second went on we grew in confidence, things we tried came off and scored some well worked good goals.

“Hopefully we can take this new found confidence into the next game and the rest of the season.

“Barnsley’s result was just the icing on a big fat black & white cake.”

Nat Seaton:

“That’s more like it! We’re up and running with 3 points on the board.

West Ham weren’t much to shout about and we were way the better team, especially in the 2nd half.

“A more open game than we’ve had for a while made for a much more enjoyable match.

“Thanks lads for the win – a happy bank holiday weekend!”
