Mark Lawrenson has been looking at Huddersfield v Newcastle match at the weekend.
The two clubs had very contrasting fortunes at the weekend, with Huddersfield winning 3-0 at Crystal Palace and Newcastle going down 2-0 at home to Tottenham.
Lawrenson actually had praise for both managers after the opening weekend, saying David Wagner had done well to play down the victory at Palace and that Rafa’s team ‘were doing all right’ against last season’s runners-up – until Jonjo Shelvey doomed NUFC with his red card.
Newcastle will miss Shelvey and the injured Lejeune & Dummett on Sunday but Mark Lawrenson thinks that won’t stop United getting on the scoreboard.
He has predicted a 1-1 draw with Rafa looking to make sure his team don’t lose this one and go six points behind Huddersfield, whilst he believes David Wagner will be mor ethan happy with four points out of six in the first two games.
Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:
“I loved the comments of Huddersfield manager David Wagner after his side’s win over Crystal Palace, which were along the lines of, ‘we have made a really good start but we are not kidding ourselves’.
“I thought that was the perfect way to approach it because he knows there is a lot more hard work to go.
“Newcastle were doing all right against Tottenham until Jonjo Shelvey got himself sent off and that was the end of that.
“Magpies boss Rafael Benitez will not want to start the season having played two, lost two, so I think they will be keeping things pretty tight.
“A draw would not be a disaster for Huddersfield, though. That would leave them on four points, and they would only need another 36 to stay up.
“Mark Lawrenson prediction: 1-1.”
