Steve McClaren was very lucky to be taken on by Derby County after his sacking at Newcastle United.
Rather bizarrely (even more bizarre than Newcastle taking him on?), Derby took him back despite having finished him for failing in the Championship before the Magpies took him on.
In the past five months Steve McClaren has been linked with any number of jobs in the Premier League and predominantly the Championship, with the overwhelming reaction from each club’s supporters being one of fear that he could get the job.
After Ian Cathro was sacked after only seven months in the job, Hearts are after a new boss and Steve McClaren is heavily linked.
There is some negativity but fair to say Hearts fans are generally seeing the positives…
Hearts fans comment via Jambos Kickback message board:
‘You’ve got to laugh at people saying he isn’t good enough, wouldn’t do well here etc. If we are able to secure him it will go down as the best managerial appointment since Burley. He is extremely experienced which is exactly what we need.
I actually question whether we could secure his services, that’s how good and ambitious an appointment this would be.’
‘He was an absolute disaster when he got the England job despite having the likes of lampard, gerrard, Rooney etc.
Then he’s only had one successful job after that (2 if you include derby but he still got sacked).’
‘If we go down the route of avoiding anyone who’s been sacked, that’s gonna be one seriously short shortlist! Seriously, I question some of the opinions on here, they can’t be serious.’
‘McClaren has had a few ropey years at clubs lacking in any form of stability. When he is given time and stability he has performed really well. His knowledge and contacts would help every department of the club.’
‘Gareth Southgate is having the easy life? Well it is the qualifiers. They always skoosh the qualifiers.’
‘Apart from when they have Steve McClaren in charge….’
‘His last 3 or 4 jobs have been abject failures
No one in the top 2 leagues in England will touch him.
Just some of the question marks against him. He isn’t neccesarily the answer just because his CV has some wee gold stars on it.’
‘McLaren would be a great signing.
Every one has a risk factor but his contacts alone are second to none up here i would imagine.’
‘His CV is quite something and vast amounts of experience, but huge question marks over his man management and tactics.’
‘The guy has assisted Alex Ferguson, managed England and several clubs abroad. I really don’t think preparing a team to play Patrick Thistle away will worry him.’
‘I’d give my left testicle to see someone of McClaren’s stature manage HMFC. It would be nothing short of a magnificent coup.
My lingering doubt however concerns how we will fund this? If however, by some divine miracle he sets his wage demands as low as we can afford then bring it on!!’
‘He will make our average players good again.’
‘It would be a yes from me for the following reasons;
– won a league that had been dominated by the top 3 teams for years (we all want that here).
– his name would instantly get the respect of all the players. They’d play for him.
– his name would bring in some more fans.
– he must have some excellent contacts.’
‘For me working with Alex Ferguson when he led them to the very top has to be the thing that stands out though. It would be like sitting next to Steve Jobs while he created Apple or something – you must pick up a few things!’
‘McClaren would be phenomenal though, how he got a terrible Boro side to the UEFA Cup Final only he’ll know and he would improve every single player in the team with his coaching methods, and you don’t manage some big and ambitious club without strong man management.’
